8 years of suffering under Barack Obama

Appreciate the man who did as much as he could for as many as he could.

The sentence I hear most from well-meaning, conservative friends since President Trump’s election is this: “We suffered 8 years under Barack Obama.”

Fair enough. Let’s take a look.

The day Obama took office, the Dow closed at 7,949 points. Eight years later, the Dow had almost tripled.

General Motors and Chrysler were on the brink of bankruptcy, with Ford not far behind, and their failure, along with their supply chains, would have meant the loss of millions of jobs. Obama pushed through a controversial, $8o billion bailout to save the car industry. The U.S. car industry survived, started making money again, and the entire $80 billion was paid back, with interest....more

their perceived indignity of a black man and woman in the WH. It galls them no end to see that a black man is smart, competent, eloquent, loved by millions. They are people who put their kids in all-white charter schools and resent not being able to use the N-word.

That was the total summation of their hatred for him. I listened guys that didn't even have the fortitude to graduate from high school call him a dumb n...ger. These are people who have little hope for any kind of decent future in this dynamic society. Those jobs where a person with a minimal amount of education could make a living in low skill factory jobs is history. The world is rapidly changing and millions are going to be left behind. The very people who could benefit from progressive programs are the very people who oppose them as government intrusions. Anyone who believes that the nation is not facing momentous challenges are deceiving themselves. Trump is not their savior, but a charlatan who is promising these deluded souls that he can turn back the clock to the Industrial Revolution that provided low skill employment. The challenge is automation and artificial intelligence that will far more transformational than the Industrial Revolution. I only wish that I had more years to witness this transformation in which artificial intelligence comes of age in which super computer will be able to accomplish virtually every task from writing novels to diagnosing and treatment of medical problems. If many are being left behind today, tomorrow will be catastrophic in comparison.

I believe that the draft forced people to confront their prejudices and the vast majority were forced to confront the ignorance of blind intolerance. It also made a person more aware that the success of the nation requires cooperation and not division. When you have been stripped of all the shields and literally laid bare before everyone you soon come to the realization of our commonality. As it has been summed up, you all bleed the same color.

Obama was coming in off the economic collapse, Bush had 9/11, Clinton came in on economic turmoil then got domestic RW terrorist and a congress that was out to get him, Bush41 had the Iraq war, Regan had high inflation, Carter had the hostages. I'd say you'd have to go back to Ford to compare something to Trump's and even there you have the post Watergate stuff he was dealing with. I shutter to think what would happen if we actually had anything of a national impact occur under this man.

We already HAVE had things with "national impact" going on -

1.) Multiple extreme weather events that have displaced millions and have cost tens if not more, of billions of dollars in damage and lost properties and businesses

2.) Trade War (this is just getting started)

The poor Marianna Islands (which are a U.S. territory) just got blasted by Typhoon Yutu (which had 180 mph gusts and is now headed for the Philippines). They are flying in extra supplies from Guam (that itself had been hit by Typhoon Manghut in September after that typhoon sideswiped the Northern Marianas) -

That adds on to the destruction from Hurricanes Michael and Florence, as well as the on-going Texas floods... and of course last year's Harvey, Irma & Maria. PLUS don't forget the record wildfires in California and the volcanic eruptions in Hawai'i, where this latest erruption was noted by the USGS as being "the largest summit collapse since at least the year 1800".

And then there's the trade war that has ratcheted up and where bribes to farmers ain't gonna be enough. Congress still has to work on the FARM Bill. Because "climate change" is so nebulous to the average person, it is downplayed. But the effects of it are stark, and have been even more noticeable just over the past couple years... and it has definitely impacted many of our people and their livelihoods, as well as our natural resources.

I know there were recent articles about the slow shift of "tornado alley" to the east, citing a recently published study in Nature on the geographic expansion of tornado occurrences and an increase in frequency in those new areas (which tend to be more densely populated).

These issues make the news for a few days, maybe a few weeks and are then forgotten while folks struggle to rebuild. And to see people running around in denial spouting nonsense, is infuriating.

means that "economics" had nothing to do with their "suffering". Their "suffering" was having to live under the rule of a black President and his family. Period. It nauseated them just like the thing in the WH right now nauseates me.

Sat Oct 27, 2018, 09:24 AM
Oct 2018

is based on the short term, is based on increasing the debt. Trump printed out money and gave it to the rich and to corporations. Trump allowed corporations to bring back unpaid offshore taxes for pennies on the dollar. Wall Street should be booming. When his policies, like trade tariffs, affect his base, he simply prints out billions more dollars to subsidize them.

I can't wait until tax time when his base finds out that their returns aren't going to be as big as they were last year.
