Votes on tuition hikes informed her college affordability stance, Kara Eastman says
By Roseann Moring
Democratic congressional candidate Kara Eastman has made college affordability a central part of her platform, and shes gotten a first-hand look at the topic in her four years on the board of Metropolitan Community College.
But shes also come under fire for voting for tuition increases totaling $11 per credit hour during her time on the board.
Eastman is running to unseat Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., a first-term congressman representing the Douglas and Sarpy County-based 2nd District.
Eastman believes that students should be able to go to college debt-free and shes pointed to former President Barack Obamas College for All proposal as a starting point. (Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has also proposed a similar College for All bill.) In Sanders proposal, the federal government would help cover $70 billion worth of tuition costs at colleges and universities around the country.
