The evil ones are coming out at night. From The Evansville Courier & Herald:
Owensboro man draws ire on social media for Nazi Halloween costume
In a story first reported by WEHT Eyewitness News, Bryant Goldbach dressed himself as a Nazi solder and his school-aged son as Adolf Hitler before going to a Trunk-or-Treat event Thursday evening.
He later posted a photo of himself on social media and the backlash was immediate.
Goldbach apologized, saying it was a poor decision on his part and that his intention was simply to portray historical figures.
(snip)
Screenshots of Goldbach's Facebook page prior to his apology show slogans like "White pride doesn't mean hate," "Being liberal means being a hypocrite," and various stances against social justice issues such as the concept of "white privilege."
Of course, this Nazi blamed liberals for being intolerant of Nazis.

Steven Ambroses BoB book is a fast read, and his Citizen Soldiers is full of similar anecdotes and incidents.
Nice to have something like Band to escape into when todays world is so unrelentingly, shamelessly insane. Many is the late night, when the whole house is asleep, that I enjoy re-connecting with Easy Company.

(1,376 posts)Yep, both BoB and The Pacific were amazingly well done...
And tremendous insight to both what that generation faced, and why those who survived lived out their days the way they did.
I've always thought something similar focusing on the US war at sea in 1939-45 - including the Merchant Marine - could be equally impressive.

(1,376 posts)I'm sure it will be done extremely well...
But the USN/USCG/USMS/USMM were fighting and dying in an undeclared war in the Atlantic months before Pearl Harbor; the first US ship lost to the Axis was the freighter City of Flint, captured by a German raider in 1939; the first US ship sunk because of enemy action was the freighter City of Rayville, sunk by a mine laid by another German raider in 1940.
Great stories waiting to be told.

"Sonny, it's folks dressed like you I was shooting at during the war. They still piss me off. You piss me off. You'd best get out of my sight!"
That's what my 94-year-old father would say to him. Except that he doesn't go out at night any more, and has to use a walker. But, he'd have words with a guy dressed like that.

(14,860 posts)He wore it trying to provoke a reaction.
His story doesn't add up, anyway. People screaming obscenities and threatening a child would tend to attract a lot of attention at a children's event like this one. Am I supposed to believe no one pulled out a phone and took video of said screaming and threats? That would be very odd indeed. And no one called the police? How strange.

Also regarding his "historical figure" bullshit...
That is German history and guess what idiot, they don't wear that in Germany, you know why? Because they have the correct understanding of how disgusting that history is and why it should not be commemorated in costume.
Regarding the "Tolerant Left" remark. We are tolerant and understanding of ideas that differ from our own. I am a straight man who grew up in a Catholic household. I accept as equally valid, the experiences of women, of gay, lesbian, Black, Muslim, Atheist, and other experiences that are not my own.
What nobody anywhere should EVER be tolerant of is a hateful ideology that has already in history, attempted to exterminate entire groups of people on the basis of White Supremacy.

(14,860 posts)He wanted to be accosted so he could play the victim of the "tolerant left" as he says.
In most places, it's a crime to scream obscenities in public and it's also a crime to threaten to harm a five year old boy. Did this man call the police and report the crime? Did he record any of these people threatening his five year old boy and screaming obscenities? Even if he didn't, surely someone in the crowd pulled out a phone when they people screaming obscenities and threatening a five year old boy. Does anyone know if there is a police report and/or video to support his claims?
