Thus handing him additional governmental powers and faux prestige.

(7,447 posts)This is preparation and planning, which all militaries do. It makes sense to prepare for larger scale conflicts with peer nations because that involves an entirely different set of skills and considerations than small scale insurgencies.
We've lost those skills, and if we end up in a war with a peer adversary, we risk a lot of lives by not being prepared.

(1,927 posts)Such as anti submarine, anti air, air defense, and fighting without guaranteed air support or superiority. All things that has fallen on the wayside since we have been fighting insurgency level conflicts where the enemy lacks air or naval assets. Some things, like ASW and air defense has been arguably lacking since the end of the Cold War. The military has to prepare for future conflicts and we need to be able to deal with a enemy that has parity or near parity with our abilities.
