Spirit Lake Tribe has just filed an Emergency Motion for a restraining order against the North Dakota law that is blocking Native Americans from voting:

(17,237 posts)Far back. I was told by lots of relatives, some people were Indians. I am proud of whatever heritage I am.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Native Americans. I hope you win the lawsuit.

(11,108 posts)From photos of my great grandmother, she was obviously at least partially Native American - except she wasn't. I have 0% Native American DNA.

(3,765 posts)You get half your genes from each parent but that doesn't guarantee that you will get any of the Native American DNA. I've seen videos of two sisters where they didn't get quite the same percentages of the same things but they were still deemed to be sisters. For example, if your dad is half-Italian and half-French and your mom is German, you could have half-German and half-French DNA and your sister could have half-German and 1/4 Italian and 1/4 French, or any other combination of the two.

(11,108 posts)I probably should have known this but I didn't go to law school because I was good at science.

(17,693 posts)Also Id rather not pay to give my DNA info to some company. I dont trust them because I dont have any way to determine the veracity of their results other than try multiple testing companies. Even then I wouldnt know how to discern which one was correct.
Grandma on the other hand never lied to me or anyone else.

(33,413 posts)Hopefully, the court can provide timely relief, but if it can't, at least more people will know about the attempt to disenfranchise voters.

(37,648 posts)It is so WRONG to have to hire an attorney and spend no tellin' how much money to file this restraining order request in order to exercise their right to vote! It is so obvious why this restriction on address was passed!
I just hope the court blocks the restriction for Native AMERICANS!

(1,587 posts)the moral authority to spread democracy worldwide. This is so much more than a mere contradiction. Republicans have much to answer for.

(7,725 posts)We ARE the country that promoted the whole one man one vote thing. AND killed people overseas to force this system on them bc "they just didnt know any better". It's such a GD farce these days in so many ways. It needs to stop, like last week already.

(61,697 posts)I know an aclu lawsuit has been initiated. But I hope suing specific people for intentionally trying to disenfranchise a block of voters would scare them into doing the right thing.
TomSlick
(11,108 posts)SCOTUS has already ruled upholding the statute at issue.

(15,243 posts)Wouldnt this disenfranchise anyone who had a rural address? Obviously it is targeting Native Americans but I would think the suppression would hit all rural voters. Who else is being denied a vote?

(6,207 posts)My wife's maternal grandmother told her, when she was a child, that she was a descendent of an original Mayflower passenger.
My wife spent nearly 35 years putting together the pieces. One small piece at a time. One research library at a time. One cemetery at a time. One birth certificate. One marriage certificate. One death certificate at a time. But she believed her grandmother and was determined to find the truth.
In August 2017 at the age of 70 my wife's years of research paid off. She is now an official descendent of William White an original Mayflower passenger. And has the research to prove it.
Grandmother was right. No DNA test was necessary. Public records and 35 years of research proved the lineage.

(145,530 posts)I was expecting this ruling https://electionlawblog.org/?p=101873
The allegations will require a detailed response from the Secretary of State as this case proceeds. The litany of problems identified in this new lawsuit were clearly predictable and certain to occur as the Court noted in its previous orders in Brakebill v. Jaeger.
However, a further injunction on the eve of the election will create as much confusion as it will alleviate, and is foreclosed by precedent which is hesitant to permit eleventh-hour changes to election laws. See Veasey, 769 F.3d at 895. The Court has carefully reviewed the entire record and finds the issuance of an emergency temporary restraining order unwarranted given the importance of avoiding further confusion and chaos on the eve of an election.

(14,322 posts)for tribal members without one. I hope that will be enough and they can handle all the voters who are outraged at this suppression scheme.
