Ignoring pleas for a closing focus on the economy, Trump embraces a fiery finale that has distressed vulnerable GOP candidates.

President Donald Trump hammered his hard line on immigration again on Thursday, but some Republicans wish he would shift focus to the economy, lest he drive away suburban voters and mobilize Latino communities against the GOP.
Several Republican operatives and officials described a growing sense of fear within the party over Trumps hard-line rhetoric on border security, which he has repeated nearly every day for the past three weeks.
Youre playing at the margins with Republicans on the issue of immigration, but there are very many more Democrats that might be mobilized by his rhetoric, said conservative radio host and The Resurgent editor Erick Erickson, who called Trumps immigration-heavy closing pitch not smart politically in a tweet earlier Thursday.
Operating under the assumption that talking tough on immigration can energize enough Republicans to stymie a blue wave of Democratic midterm voters, Trump has spent the past week unveiling restrictive immigration policies at a dizzying pace and making erroneous declarations about a caravan of Central American migrants.

(22,166 posts)country are these so called murderous immigrants and the like? Where? Most, if not all immigrants I know are patriots, and have a profound love for this country and its people. What concerns me is that rump has a one track mind, not paying attention to the other details of running government, and letting this singular issue dominate the conversation (only in his mind, other more intelligent people are dealing w/ the other more important issues of the day). We know how the republicans govern now (they don't, party is always first), with a sickening feeling in our stomachs. Very biased politically, pathetic and clearly unable to govern.
The issue of immigration can be dealt w/, and rump has failed to even act on anything. He keeps bitching about it, and yet has done NOTHING about it other than a stupid wall which won't work. This issue is nonsense and not supported by the facts, and rump needs to be removed from office by Congress or the cabinet members since he's failing miserably and abusing the powers of the presidency.
A total failure, in that he's not getting people together to deal w/ issues, but instead, driving them apart.
Lets move on, remove this horrible stain of this so called president, his cabinet, and the worthless republican Congressional house and senate members that are allowing this ridiculous so called president to remain in office when he is so clearly incompetent.
GOTV, my friends. Coming soon, we'll finally experience freedom from this daily spew of insults from this so called president who clearly is incompetent and unable to work in any capacity whatsoever.
