Asymmetrical Polarization

Last edited Sat Nov 3, 2018, 05:00 PM - Edit history (1)

Vox made a really good video showing how Republicans have moved more extreme and more obstructionist than Democrats and how the media and other people make a false equivalency that both parties refuse to work together:

This has been a very crucial political poison that allows Republicans to get away with obstructionism. People need to start addressing and correcting these false equivalencies.
I know from experience most people, through apathy and ignorance, default to a middle ground of "both parties do the same thing" and use this narrative to further their lack of participation in the system. Now, when Americans have seen how extreme the sexual assault, racist, violence inducing Republican party is, is the time to start correcting these false notions. We need to be educated about the premise so we can make educated arguments specifically about asymmetrical polarization. We can't combat Republicans on the false notion of even ground; this must be established when making arguments.

Has anyone else had experiences like this? I feel like I hear false equivalencies all the time. I've used the argument 'Democrats passed the ACA, Republicans spent almost a decade and millions of dollars trying to repeal it with no alternative'.

I think it's really important but in the circles I run in this is the first I've heard to it, specifically. IMO it really needs to get into the dialog.

"This Mr. Hitler has a lot of new ideas for his Third Reich and the Allies refuse to work with him. How dare they?"

I don't want Vichy Democrats! Refusal is just what is called for.

Compromising with modern "Conservatives" would be akin to reasonable Germans in the 1930s compromising withe Nazis and agreeing to only kill 1/2 the Jews.

What would have been considered a moderate Republican a few decades ago is now considered a socialist to that party today.

I absolutely despise hearing people like Steve Kornaki and Chris Matthews talk up how "both sides" have become extreme and won't compramise when really one party has allowed Nazi's and extremists in while the other party wants everyone to have health care and the right to vote.

He has to book people for his Sunday show Meet The Press, and the Republicans won't play along if they think Todd will sandbag them. On his daily show he's careful to not play favorites, but I don't think it's the same thing as "both-sides-ism." Todd is smart enough to avoid the right-wing bullshitters, and I give him credit for that. He'll never be called a liberal, but I haven't seen him favor right-wingers either. He's middle of the road, and that vexes a lot of DUers I guess.

... doesn't present the true story of what's happening.

A slave owner can claim slaves during the civil war were violent and then use that to justify further enslavement

Chuck Todd would say, "both sides have a point" ...

crap and it pissed me off. Last week I went with her to a protest and I said, "...all I know is that 11 people would be alive right now if tRump weren't the fake prez" and she responded with her same BS response, "There was always racism and hate and bigotry out there so you can't say that". I told her that he incites violence and hatred more than any other President and it is his fault indirectly. Her whataboutism is really ridiculous.
