At least 15 cats were found dead inside a Texas City sanctuary during a Tuesday morning raid.
Animal control officers were sent to the Whiskerville Animal Sanctuary on 6th Street North, after a neighbor called police to complain she hadnt seen anyone visit the facility in awhile.

The owner told KHOU 11 News that she had as many as 195 cats roaming free inside two buildings.
"Theres been some deceased cats in there and I dont know anything about it," a tearful Wydell Dixon told us after talking with police about what they found inside. "And I want to get to the bottom of it. This is not how I do things.

The owner stated that she had not been in her own facility for some time and had left the care to someone else. Sickening.

(16,327 posts)My sister runs a wildlife and domestic rabbit rescue/rehab in Texas in her own home. Even so, she often has to leave for extended periods -- family events, conferences, out of state rescues -- and depends on others (paid and unpaid) to care for the animals and facility while she is gone. Most rescue facilities depend on such caretakers, and smaller rescues often have the hardest time finding dependable people to do that work.
With that said, even when she is there at the rescue, my sister loses domestic rabbits on almost a daily basis. Animals that are in rescues are most often the unadoptable, including the aged and the chronically ill -- the first to die even if the rescue's care is good.
Like too many people involved in rescue work, this woman sounds like she wanted to do something for unwanted cats and found herself overwhelmed and understaffed/underfunded for the task.
