I've been really startled by the number of people that thought my post was meant critically. So let me explain. I loved Robert Kennedy. All of us of an age did, I think. But O'Rourke doesn't just look like RFK, he smiles like him. He carries himself the same way. Most important, he has the same optimism and concern for people. He's got me excited, for sure. And if some of it is because he triggers memories, that's great, I think.
Check out reply #5.

(45,120 posts)his values and that wonderful personality of his that caught me. He is wise beyond his years, but is young and playful, like an old soul. When he responded to the question about football players kneeling he brought me to tears.

(53,410 posts)Right now I cant think of any other politicians whos first name is all the recognition they need. Usually its the last name only, or both names that are needed.
Plus Beto is the Spanish shortened name for Roberto. All of it makes him just one of our guys. Someone you would be more likely to actually have a beer with. Not someone who pretended to be that guy.

He's extremely inspirational and motivational. People will vote FOR Beto, instead of just against Ted Cruz.

(20,878 posts)I hope he runs, perhaps w/Beto O'Rourke is my dream.
Will it happen is the question.
Re: RFK, Jr.
He had plenty of appeal it many ways that JFK did not. He had a lot to offer in different/better perspectives. He was a man of his time no doubt.

(10,721 posts)I don't see much resemblance between him and RFK.

(14,811 posts)I've seen him speak 15-20 times and I've yet to hear him say anything I disagree with. I think he'd really be an asset in the senate and I hope he wins. He's the polar opposite of who he'd replace.

(94,721 posts)Let's be blunt, almost none of current voters remembers what RFK looked like. Most weren't alive when RFK was a candidate.

(1,483 posts)And impressed by his inclusive message.
"If you're a Republican? You're in the right place.
If you're a Democrat? You're in the right place."
His Spanish fluency.
I think his youthful looks are a plus for youthful non-voters.
He reminds me more of the aw shucks heroes of "Mr. Something goes to Washington" 30's Era Pro-Democracy films.
More Jimmy Stewart than Kennedyish.

That sounds like Beto speech. I can imagine him saying it.

(53,410 posts)Though I must confess that when I finished The Grapes of Wrath I threw the book across the room! The ending was the most depressing thing I have ever read, and that include Thomas Hardys books! I still fume a bit when I think of it.
But, yes, Henry Fonda was great in it.
