Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

So true.

(6,488 posts)He would be run out of today's Republican party, as would Nixon and even Reagan, for not being sufficiently pure, i.e. crazy.

(1,896 posts)But he had principles and he genuinely thought he had a recipe to make America a better place. I can't say he was right because he wasn't, but I can't vilify the man simply for being wrong. I really think if he were alive today you could at least have a reasonable argument with him.

(6,041 posts)Mind you I disagreed with him on a number of things including a rapid escalation of the war in Vietnam. He definitely loved America more than fattening up his bank account.
He wasn't afraid of calling out Repugs that screwed up. I think it was Reagan during Iran/Contra that Goldwater said something like "Looks like he got his butt caught in a crack." If he was alive today he would be one Republican who would have balls enough to call the Orange Menace out and I bet he would do so repeatedly.
