Rush Limbaugh is going down here's the proof
by Richard Myers
In its SEC filing's recitation of risk factors, the company noted without naming names that the RUSH LIMBAUGH controversy has "significantly impacted" DIAL GLOBAL's business and has led to some advertisers in News-Talk formats pulling ads that ran in proximity to that show and caused some ads to get pulled even though DIAL GLOBAL does not syndicate LIMBAUGH's show. The company says it has made "meaningful changes to our internal systems and procedures to allow us to better separate our advertisers' ads from certain controversial programming," but warned that "such process has consumed time and resources, and notwithstanding our efforts, certain advertisers have exited news talk programming and may not ultimately resume advertising in this area of programming at previous levels, or at all. If we are unable to bring back advertisers into our news/talk radio programming, this would have an adverse effect on our revenue, which would have an adverse effect on our results of operations."

Dial Global's costs grew by 250 percent.
This is the second major radio network to report on the Rush impact; previously, Cumulus reported losing millions of dollars due to advertisers fleeing the program. Clear Channel, the largest network which actually syndicates Rush, and is owned by Mitt Romney's Bain Capital, and therefore is at risk of being plundered into bankruptcy is privately held, and isn't expected to report on the damage.

(12,272 posts)Not so much Willard owning the media as the LDS in general, especially in the west. Seems to me there was something about media monopolies that changed a while back that allowed this to happen. And now it is legal to use propaganda on our own people, hmmm, it all just falls into place doesn't it?

(31,706 posts)Yep...Rushbo could be in a bit of trouble. Radio...especially hate radio remains in a very depressed state. Revenues remain flat and the value of stations continue to fall making them bigger economic drains on their owners. The medium has lost virutally its entire audience under age 40 and AM is on its last legs. Hate radio has drive many listeners and now advertisers from the cesspool, but that's just part of what's happening here.
Cumulus recently devoured Citadel Broadcasting and is going after Clear Channel for the shrinking radio revenues that are still out there. They want to jetison programming from Premiere/Clear Channel and replace Rushbo with their own midday blowhard: Mike Hucklenutz. Just the other day Cheap Channel purchased WOR in New York in anticipation of Rushbo being dumped from WABC and rumors are they will also buy WGN in Chicago when Rushbo gets dumped by WLS.
One last point...revenues, while important, are not the driving force behind these corporates. It's stock prices and the ability to refinance debt. Bain/Clear Channel is at least 14 billion in the hole and I suspect if Willard loses in November then we'll see Bain lose interest in the company and begin to do its dismantiling game to try to recoup their money...

(35,712 posts)Very interesting. Here's a clip from the website "The Deal Pipeline." It's old--Feb. of this year--but all I could find with just a quick search:
Clear Channel has close to $20 billion in long-term debt. The San Antonio company faces particularly large payments in 2014 and 2016, with maturities of $2.87 billion and $12.25 billion, respectively.

(24,411 posts)I listen to a lot of talk radio. I think it's important to know what these blowhard are up to. I have to drive with a large bottle of Pepto, but I manage.
I agree, these radio hosts are toxic. They divide our nation and if you follow the money/power trail--they are funded by corporatists. The Koch Brothers are big, big fans of Beck. In my opinion--Beck is the worst. He is a serial liar and a dry drunk drama queen. I've never heard anyone misrepresent liberals like Beck. He has convinced his audience that we are inhuman objects who want to destroy the world. He's a hater, just like Limbaugh and Hannity.
I will say this though, some of these right-wing hate jockeys are good communicators. Just like Hitler. They are charismatic, entertaining and they are good at what they do. That's what makes them so dangerous. Ignorant people are drawn in by their crafty manipulations.
I've listened to Huckabee and his show is like listening to oatmeal cool down. He is NOT a good communicator and the show is so bland and boring. He will not last.
I really hope that DUers are right--that this hate fest is fading. I think these people do significant damage to our country and it's good news to hear that their toxic programs may be losing popularity.

(31,706 posts)I was there at the beginnings in the 80s...when FM surpassed AM as the most popular radio band and AM turned to talk to hang on to its dwindling audience. Hate radio grabbed hold as there was a void in programming as "deregulation" encouraged the corporate invasion of the public airwaves and the destruction of local radio. Hate radio evolved to cater to the older predominately male audience that still hung onto their AM radios (sports talk was another format that also has flourished). All a station had to do was plug into the satellite and let rushbo spew venom...whatever change they made from local advertisers went right into their pockets and it kept the band viable throughout the last 20 years but times and the medium have changed.
You are right...the hate mongers, especially rushbo, are good communicators. Look what audience they're reaching out to...mostly loners and those who use hate radio as a daily affirmation about their own frustrated lives. They get daily affirmations that all that's wrong in the world is someone elses fault and to hate or fear those who threaten their little bubble...especially those with facts. Conspiracies run amok as well as they also attract a steady stream of listeners in a medium whose audience and revenues are a fraction of what they once were.
Hucklenutz is part of a bigger "radio war" that is taking place between Clear Channel and Cumulus. Rushbo's show is produced by Premiere that is owned by Clear Channel while Hucklenutz show is distributed by Cumulus and both air during the midday hours. Right now Cumulus is paying Clear Channel to carry rushbo or splitting revenues with them and they want all the money and ratings to themselves. Since Cumulus represents some of Rushbo's most powerful outlets the dumping of Rush on some of these stations could be a very big blow to his fortunes as well as Clear Channel.
Hate radio is dying...as is its audience. Few hate stations draw well with listeners under 40...and its just a matter of time when the genre fades into financial obscurity. With the rise of internet and satellite radio the old clunker AM and FM stations are being replaced and the Clear Channels and Cumulus (who overpaid for hundreds of stations) now face huge debts with shrinking revenue bases. Sucks to be them.
Cheers...

(53,661 posts)In a statement that appeared below the appeal, Defense Department official Ryan G. Whitman wrote that "AFN does not censor content, and we believe it is important that service members have access to a variety of viewpoints."
Whitman said that Limbaugh's program, like others AFN broadcasts, was simply chosen on the basis of its popularity at home. "AFN acquires top-rated radio programs, as measured by audience ratings in the United States, and delivers them via satellite to our soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen stationed worldwide in 177 countries," he wrote.
The petition, which was submitted by a commenter at liberal blog Daily Kos, had recieved 29,189 signatures by Tuesday afternoon.

Rush Limbaugh: Still has the biggest sponsor on his side
March 05, 2012|By Rene Lynch
Rush Limbaugh is probably not sweating this one, folks. The critics keep piling on. But the immensely popular talk radio host has the biggest "sponsor" of all on his side: Clear Channel radio network.
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar/05/nation/la-na-nn-rush-limbaugh-20120305
Rush quote that is older, but here it is in 2001:
"I tell people don't kill all the liberals, leave enough around so we can have two on every campus; living fossils, so we will never forget what these people stood for." ~ Rush Limbaugh
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,163548,00.html
These have been around since the early 1990s, after Rush went national in the late 1980's.
I'm sure there's no connection:

The subconscious takes in everything in it sees and stores all emotional evidence of the reality that a person lives in. Media purveyors know that it never leaves and use it to promote knee-jerk reaction beyond the native ability of a person to reason that feeling. Garbage in, garbage out.

(1,245 posts)sell my employer some useless product (probably for some kickback) and I was tasked with helping him unload it. The salesman had one of those Liberal Hunting Permit stickers on his truck-I gave the paunchy, muscle less doughboy my crazy eyed stare and said "I'm a liberal-you want to try me?" He twittered nervously and said it was just a joke. I said, "That's not what I asked. DO YOU WANT TO TRY ME?" I could have dropped him like a bad habit and he knew it. I've never seen him since.

(53,661 posts)'Human hunting licenses.' Because that's what the blatant message is that these guys have gotten away with for so long. They support, and it's not a joke really, as I'm sure you've noted from recent events reported here, the elimination of anyone that does not agree with them.
The list is pretty long and those people have done nothing to them. In another era, they would have used the n-word or the pejorative Jew. The hatred toward liberals is out of context and irrational. The hostility is designed to shut people up.
It's a philosophy of government, not serial killers. Thanks for standing up to the guy. Hope he takes his hateful sticker off the car now. I get sickened every time I see one, and know that threatening anyone else's life is not a joke. Never.

(35,712 posts)I agree that we are seeing the beginnings! Yeah!!!
These authors put out a book about it in 2004. Essentially what it says is that with the demographic trends that are in place now, Democrats will be the party of choice.
The Emerging Democratic Majority

ONE OF THE ECONOMIST'S BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR AND A WINNER OF THE WASHINGTON MONTHLY'S ANNUAL POLITICAL BOOK AWARD
Political experts John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira convincingly use hard data -- demographic, geographic, economic, and political -- to forecast the dawn of a new progressive era. In the 1960s, Kevin Phillips, battling conventional wisdom, correctly foretold the dawn of a new conservative era. His book, The Emerging Republican Majority, became an indispensable guide for all those attempting to understand political change through the 1970s and 1980s. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, with the country in Republican hands, The Emerging Democratic Majority is the indispensable guide to this era.
