State of Kansas (I needed birth certificate to re-new license in December, 2009)
Birth Certificate issuance outsourced to private company
You must order the birth certificate on-line
It costs me between $42 and $44 (It really irked me that the company didn't state how much their services would cost until after I completed the transaction)
I received certified copy in mail in less than 5 working days
==============================================
How much does it cost in your state?
How long did it take get your birth certificate back?
Did you need to order it on-line?

(11,495 posts)I had to get a certified copy for my son to get his drivers license 2 years ago an was $25. Not sure if every county charges the same price or not.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)It was $15.00 for a certified copy of my birth certificate to renew my driver's license. When I went to get the BC, I was required to show my DL to prove who I was. Then when renewing the DL, I was required to show the BC (which I had just gotten with my DL) in order to prove who I was.
Nice circular logic there......

(29,676 posts)I heard something about how they wanted to limit how many places you could get one. This was a couple of years ago so I don't know if they ever made that limit.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)that is where I got it at. I don't know of any move to change that.

(29,676 posts)Remember all the crap Matt Blunt wanted to do to the state? Glad most of his stuff didn't quite go through.
Supposedly he wanted to make it where there would only be a few places a person could pick up a bc-Jeff City, an office in KC, one in St Louis and I think one in Springfield. The rest would have to be mail order, which he wanted to privatize.
Matt Blunt was a joke. A scary joke, but a joke nonetheless.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)glad he is off the radar. I actually think the guy never wanted the job from the start, just part of the family business, so to speak. Glad he is gone.
I recall talking to my state house rep, when this whole thing was swirling on voter ID and such. I had emailed him about the circular logic of needing the Driver's License to get the Birth Certificate to get the Driver's License and He told me that it wasn't going to happen as they were not going to fund the means to provide ID's to those who could not come up with a DL to vote. That however was a few years ago and as we see in PA things are often not as we think they should be.

And if he had his way, only landowning white men would be allowed to even attempt to register to vote.
As to Blunt: if he didn't get out soon I think a few things were going to come to light about him-things that weren't positive for his image.

(38,958 posts)my current one just lost a primary challenge, to a pro life Democrat that seemed remarkably well funded. Lots of yard signs & billboards up very early. I just might skip the state house box on the ballot. He will win as it's a heavily Democratic District, but I just don't get a good vibe from him.
It's the new & improved MO 68th.

(29,676 posts)My district is the 121. Red and redder.
Locally they are trying to get more of the college students registered, since they reside here more than six months out of the year. If that happens the area will become bluer.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)mostly. I hope that they have good luck getting the students registered, but Missouri is certainly a very regional state in the way it looks at politics. Just visited the Civil War exhibit at the History Museum in Forest Park & one finds that this regionalism has very long roots based upon what is presented there.

(29,676 posts)If any state is truly fighting the Civil War to this day, it's not in the South-it's Missouri. The heavy divisions of North and South are still apparent to this day and most don't even realize it.
Think about the difference between Kirksville and Cape Girardeau. Both are a similar size, both college towns, both in the same state. Both were even sites of Civil War battles. The towns themselves are quite different in attitude. Kirksville has that upper Midwest farmer's attitude-they really are more like Iowa. Cape G is-well, Rush is from there. I think that answers everything.
Missouri had far more battles than most realize.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Civil_War_battles
I've lived in both Saline and Lafayette Counties. I graduated from high school in Saline County. Both counties are in the top five of those who owned the most slaves during the war. To this day the attitude in those counties are much different than in other counties that didn't own as many. I've learned this over the years just by living in other counties.

(Look at the section about slave holdings-Lafayette is number one while Saline is number four.)

(34,108 posts)Is their state site not correct? http://www.kdheks.gov/vital/birth_howto.html
You might've gotten scammed by one of those sites who come up in a Google search that will take your money for something you can do yourself. I see that a lot when people want copies of things such as Deeds, birth certificates, marriage certificates, and the like.
xmas74
(29,676 posts)that's for a walk-in. It's an additional $11.00 for internet and for telephone, which it sounds like the poster used.

I had something similar with Wisconsin.

(11,119 posts)I used vital-chek and it looks like they hosed me. It seems as though I could have saved myself $16 - $18 if I had searched a little more wisely!
But the good thing is that posts like yours show everybody how many $ can be saved by being a little more discriminating in their choice of service providers!

(2,921 posts)so we didn't have to spend another $20 just to give you a nice copy of a piece of paper...
Just the $17.75, and you get the certificate you need.

(29,676 posts)it's $15 per record. It doesn't seem to matter if you pick it up in person or mail in the info.

My birth state of Wisconsin-I had to get a new bc last spring. I ordered it three times and never received it, at $20 each time. (I cancelled each money order after 9 weeks.) Finally, I ordered it via fax with a grand total of $50.00. The total break down, according to my receipt in hand: Receipt of fax-$3., birth certificate-$20.00, expedited service (because all fax orders are automatically expedited)-$20.00, credit card charge-$6.00, misc fee-$1.00. $50.00 total.
I called Madison repeatedly and was informed that this was the best way to guarantee actual delivery out-of-state. All fax orders have an additional charge for receiving the fax, for cc fees. There was no way around it. Oh, and I still don't know what the misc fee was about.

(13,262 posts)That was the total for the Certificate plus mailing to his home in PA (ordered online). He had to have quite a bit of detailed information to get it (name of hospital, etc.).
Then he paid $20 to the state of PA for his photo ID.

(129,453 posts)I think it took about 2 weeks (back some time ago for a passport renewal, it may be faster now) and I got it online (they also offer mail-in requests and requests via actual offices in select cities).

(30,947 posts)In order to renew my driver's license in Georgia, I must have a certified copy of my birth certificate. I don't have to renew until 2014, so I won't worry about until next year. I guess I will have to order it online unless I want to take a trip to Pennsylvania.

I can't believe the footdragging when it's been evident since the 2010 Mid Terms.
Get Holder on this ...Civil Rights, Voting Rights Violations by ALEC and REPUG PACS who are running rings around Justice Department!
It's dreadful what's being done with "Voter I.D." and lack of REAL Push Back by Obama/Holder!

But, you're right! I'm hoping the Justice Dept can do something about these backwards voter ID laws in plenty of time for election day.
It sure looks like the repukes are going to try to steal another election. The real question is whether or not WE will let them get away with it!

(22,271 posts)Went to the Hall of Records office. Filled out a form and within 10 minutes they came back with a certified copy. $18.00. I'm sure there's probably on on-line version of the request as well. Most likely the same price.
P.S. Oops, this was in CA.

(2,921 posts)I received my son's birth certificate from the State of Colorado in 2009 shortly after he was born, and that time their cost was $17.75 (and I just checked - prices hasn't changed)
Heck, Colorado doesn't charge you a dime if you're not in a hurry to mail it to you.

(34,137 posts)When I needed copies, my Mom went to the county courthouse (in the town where I was born and she still lives) and got them for me. It was quicker than me trying to order them online. Of course, right after I got the copies from her I found the original hospital certificate with my baby footprints and a copy my parents had gotten in the 50s to get my Social Security number.

(22,308 posts)At least that is what I got just now when looking about ordering it online.
I believe it can be done in person but I have not looked into it.
Looks like about 2 weeks to get it in the mail from an online order without paying more for shipping.
