Republicans Revive Silly Threat of Secession

The “Blue Wave” in 2018 led to significant Democratic victories around the country, but nowhere was this more evident than in Colorado, where Democrats now control all four major statewide offices — Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Secretary of State — as well as both chambers of the state legislature.

This big “Blue Wave” in Colorado has some rural Republicans mashing the panic button and returning to one of the sillier threats in recent Colorado political history.

As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:
“We lost everything,” lamented Republican Rio Blanco County Commissioner Shawn Bolton.
He fears the Democrats “will just run rampant” when it comes to oil and gas and other policy matters, potentially prompting the revival of the secession movement that arose in some rural Colorado counties several years ago due to Democrat-led state actions at the time. [Pols emphasis]

“They don’t know how to act. They get power and act like little kids. I have a feeling if they go and start being stupid again like they were that time you’ll see that movement start up big-time,” he said.

First off, let’s not overlook the irony of this quote. Republican County Commissioner Shawn Bolton of Rio Blanco County is mad that his team lost last week, so he wants to take his ball and go home. But Bolton says that it is Democrats who “don’t know how to act.” ...

The northern and eastern areas - sparsely populated and mainly farming and ranching - proposed to annex to Wyoming. Lost about 60-40 as I recall.

Weld County, where I live, was smack in the middle of that nonsense, with one of our county commissioners insisting (on national TV, no less) that "the Constitution gives us the right to suckcede (that's how she pronounced it). We still have the farming and ranching, but when it comes to resource utilization anything ag-related takes a distant back seat to oil and gas; this county has over 22k wells, with more coming, and each well uses and renders permanently toxic millions of gallons of water. In the recent election, O&G spent millions fighting a referendum that would require operations to be removed 2500' from schools and hospitals; it was voted down, and the day after the election there was an explosion and fire at a well site and authorities enacted evacuation of anyone within a one mile radius. Yeah, O&G would welcome secession, their deep pockets being able to purchase favorable laws. Won't happen, but ye gods.

Send 'em all to Mexico and give us some hungry, hard-working Mexicans in their stead. I'm cool with a trade-off like that.

One of his fellow nuts posted it asking if he was ready. I couldn't decide if they were talking about secession or going to meet the other nuts on the border. The map was splitting the states up in districts and included DC with the south.

Every time they start it up, it always feels more like they're pouting that they can't enforce their horrid evangelical social agenda on the whole of society instead of anything having to do with economics.

GOP in Colorado really must be losing their minds now that they have an LGBTQ Governor. Sad.

But of course, Republican voters are constantly showing us how silly they are. Like worrying about caravans, forming unregulated militias, going to Trump rallies, etc. etc..

These are some really ignorant people.

Uh, Mr. Bolton? If conservatives knew how to act when you were in power, you'd still be in power, don't you think?
