About trump cancelling his trip to the WWI AMERICAN cemetery:

We were reminded this afternoon, this isn't just any Veterans' Day weekend (which is important in itself), this is the ONE HUNDREDTH commemoration of the end of WWI. The cemetery is where AMERICANS who fought and died in France are buried.

And the president of the United States couldn't be bothered to pay his respects? No president in our entire history would have missed this, and to miss it for such a lame excuse?

Damn, he'd just better STFU the next time an athlete kneels during the National Anthem.

Why should he go to commemorate the end of a war in which the good guys lost?

No wonder he couldn't be bothered. Besides, he probably thought Belleau Wood was Natalie Wood's mother.

I know Paris traffic is horrendous, but it is not as difficult to navigate on a Saturday morning as it is during the week. He could have made 85 Km in 2 hours max. If his digestive tract can't handle it, then he should have stayed home. It looks a LOT worse that he flew to Paris and stayed downtown. If he had a serious medical issue, his staff has no business keeping it quiet. If there is any danger of Ayatollah Pence even becoming acting president, we need to know so we can start loading up on garlic and silver nitrate now.

He was a teacher, who lived with his sister, who never remarried after her husband died in the war to end all wars. The medics who treated him on the battlefield always buried the medical waste, with the chaplain presiding over the burial.

My great aunt and uncle went to France every year to lay flowers for her husband. They both lived until the 1960's, and I was always fascinated by them.

It was incredibly important because it was the first time a poet wrote about war not as noble and epic, but as horrible and real.

You might know, but for the room, Wilfred Owen, who wrote it, was a wonderful poet, a gay man, a soldier writing from personal experience who was taken to a hospital in mid war and “successfully” treated for PTSD, and was sent back to die.

So he’s one of the vets dishonored this weekend.

This was a deliberate action of insult to the French people. It was another attempt to create a larger rift between the US and its traditional allies. It's no coincidence that Trump will be meeting (has met?) Putin while there. There is no way that it could be seen as anything but a direct affront to France and every other country who fought with the Allies.

It's too much work. He's lazy. He's only interested in the prestige of his office, which thanks to his behavior is greatly tarnished. I knew last week that his trip to Europe for this event would be a complete butt-show. That's what all Trump public appearances have devolved into - embarrassing butt-shows. Even more egregious is his failure to attend the Paris Peace Forum hosted by Macron after this week-end's events. Absolutely shameful. Our President should be at that Peace Forum in a leadership role. But no, Trump will be absent.

He's all about perceptions. He must have had a vision of the shinny helicopter descending from the sky while all eyes watched its approach and landing. Something other world leaders wouldn't have. He would step out into the sunshine to the applause of adoring fans. But drizzle and no sunshine don't make good TV. Arriving by car like the others doesn't present the same visual opportunities so why bother. Remember, it's ALWAYS about him!

I doubt he has the cognitive ability to configure a subtle insult to Macron or any one else. His insults are generally more direct.

Either way, he is an embarrassment to our country.
