At least not for the past 3, or so, generations, and on to his children. He has no concept of public service. It's a foreign concept - like something from another planet, for him.
I can't find a generation, in my family, where more than one family member WASN'T serving. Some were drafted. Some enlisted. All served so I was raised with an immense respect for those currently serving, and our Veterans. I watched two uncles carry horrific emotional burdens because of what they saw and experienced. No one will ever convince me that their early deaths weren't directly attributable to their combat experiences.
For the past two days I've seen trump* begrudgingly go through the motions of faking compassion and respect. And you know he's only there because he can see Putin, which royally pisses me off.
Sorry - I'm in a bit of a lather, this morning. As soon as the sun is over the yardarm, I'm breaking out the scotch.

(31,113 posts)Rump is such a fucking coward he couldnt even go out into the rain to honor veterans.
Obama of course did just that.
Trump would last 3 hours, maybe, in boot camp of any military branch, not one full day, not possible.

(1,660 posts)Long as I can remember. I have family who were in the civil war, wwi, wwii, Korea, Vietnam and my brother just retired after completing his service term.
I would think it would be rare for most Americans to have never had anyone in the military for generation after generation.

What person of European background today of all days is not feeling the weight of history. Two horrible world wars, a Cold War that nearly destroyed mankind, wars in Asia, family members forever changed. There can only be one human being so calloused and uncaring this weekend to have no reflection, no empathy, no gratitude, no guilt for what our family members have experienced. 45s grandfather was a German draft dodger. His lack of sense of duty is genetic.

(26,286 posts)All in all, I had 5 uncles in World War II - two in full combat, one served in England as a pilot trainer but also flew reconnaissance. Two were stationed state side.
My Dad enlisted in the Marines as soon as he was out of high school, but by the time he was finished with training, the fighting was over. He was in President Truman's Honor Guard.
One uncle in the Korean conflict but his appendix burst just before he was due to be sent over. He was re-assigned and spent the rest of his time in Germany. The exact same thing happened to a cousin, during Vietnam. Another cousin enlisted but was stationed in Japan.
I'm a Navy Vet and my nephew is an Air Force Vet. So, we've continued a family tradition that goes straight back to the Revolutionary War, on my Dad's side of the family. Something tells me that tradition might be coming to an end, but we'll see.

(6,856 posts)My grandfather and great-uncles served in WWI; my father and uncle served in WWII, 2 uncles served after WWII, 2 cousins served during Vietnam era, one cousin lifetime Air Force, but after that, zero. None of the nieces, nephews, younger cousins have served.
On the one hand, I am happy that wars have not mandated service. On the other hand, I am worried that service will be relegated to poor people and that the elites will never have to serve.
