Twitter Points and Laughs at Mitch McConnell Op-Ed Asking if Dems 'Will Work With Us'

by Colby Hall | Nov 14th, 2018, 6:35 am

Fox News published an op-ed column from the sitting Senate Majority Leader titled Sen. Mitch McConnell: Will Dems work with us, or simply put partisan politics ahead of the country? The column first lists the accomplishments made by US Congress that enjoyed Republican-controlled House and Senate, followed by a passive-aggressive expectation that a newly Democratic-controlled House put working with their political adversaries over partisan politics.

The column represents a stunning bit of chutzpah on behalf of McConnell, who rose to power in Republican ranks because of his obstructionist leadership during the Obama administration.

McConnell wrote:

So make no mistake. The Senate has proven its ability to reach bipartisan solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation.

And looking ahead to the coming year, there will be no shortage of opportunities to continue this impressive record of cooperation across the aisle and across the Capitol.

What we can make of those opportunities will depend on our Democratic colleagues. Will they choose to go it alone and simply make political points? Or will they choose to work together and actually make a difference?

For those who covered politics roughly 10 years ago, this position can be charitably described as shocking. Critics will see it as remarkably hypocritical.

In 2010 Leader McConnell told National Journal: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” During Obama’s tenure as president, House Majority Leader John Boehner famously said of Obama’s agenda: “We’re going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”

McConnell and Boehner worked hand in glove while in Congress to obstruct every part of Obama’s agenda, including the historic blocking of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

The reaction on Twitter was pretty much what you might expect, but no less enjoyable:
