Jonathan Chait: The point is to establish legal accountability for the president. Well-functioning democracies dont have criminal oligarchies running the country with legal impunity. The kind of deep systemic corruption Trump is implementing, in which establishing a political alliance with a ruling family is a key step in amassing and protecting wealth, depends on selective legal enforcement. More to the point, it requires business partners. Maybe Donald Trump cant be hauled off to prison, but his partners can. And that prospect can scare off the collaborators Trump needs.
Second, and more to the point, even if Robert Mueller cant kick Trump out of the White House directly and the Senate wont, theres a body of people who can: the 2020 electorate. And the Trump investigations are building a powerful case that will be brought to bear on that election.

(7,817 posts)Trump....not to get to impeachment...not to gain political advantage (like the Nunes 'investigation' or the Gowdy investigations). This is fundamental fact finding. And hopefully the nation will go where the facts point.

(3,784 posts)Republicans are too spineless to put country over Party. We won't be able to find 18 Republican Senators with a spine in order to convict. I want the entire Trump Crime Family in PRISON.
There is a 0% chance he'll be convicted by the Senate. But I'd say there's about a 99% chance he'll be convicted by a COURT. I'm telling you, Mueller is amassing a MOUNTAIN of evidence that only the most brainwashed of Trump cultists could ignore.
