by Laura Clawson
Republicans are going back to their favorite page in the 2004 playbook: trying to turn the opponent's strengths into weaknesses. In Sen. John Kerry's case, that meant attacking his military career. Now, they're going after President Barack Obama's national security strengths. In other words, they're trying to turn the killing of Osama bin Laden into a weakness.
The "Special Operations Opsec Education Fund," naturally a 501(c)(4) that doesn't have to disclose the names of its donors, has produced a video assailing national security leaks. By the Obama administration. When the group includes these guys:
Rustmann, who had supervised Plame during her early years at the CIA, argued on Fox that disclosing Plames name was not a significant breach of national security. He discussed details of her training, her career and her cover.
It isn't a big deal, he said about the illegal disclosure of the covert officers name. It was a light, nonofficial cover.
Scott Taylor, chairman of OPSEC, is a former Navy SEAL. An unsuccessful Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia in 2010, he sat down with NBC News last summer for a documentary titled Secrets of Seal Team Six. The film said the military had urged former SEALs not to talk.
Also in the group is a former spokesman for the director of national intelligence under George W. Bush. Yet he's claiming to be outraged about leaks now. But of course none of this is about leaks. It's about, as always, turning an opponent's strength into a weakness and generally making him look like a dick:
In an effort to portray Mr. Obama as a braggart taking credit for the accomplishments of special forces and intelligence operatives, the video omits some of his remarks in announcing Bin Ladens killing. In that late-night televised address, Mr. Obama credited 10 years of tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, but that is edited out.
As the video at top shows, that's quite a lot of thanks to edit out. But it's what the Karl Rove playbook says to do, and the Republican operatives and former Republican candidates in "Opsec" are intent on following the playbook to the letter.

(25,966 posts)Part of the reason this worked on Kerry is that he didn't take it seriously soon enough. Not that I blame him. I think Gore and Kerry just couldn't believe that (a) the GOP would be so brazenly dishonest and (b) that it would work.
Obama's campaign machine seems to know better.

(59,504 posts)1) Obama is President giving him a platform Kerry did not have
2) Note that the strongest Obama charge is that this is swiftboating - ie despicable lying. The fact that the Republicans used almost the same method - and they were shown to be liars - makes disputing this easier. No one is arguing that this large group of people can't all be lying.
3) The media is itself condemning them - while most of the cable media and radio played with the SBVT for nearly a month - even though it was the official Navy record they challenged with absolutely no proof.

(25,966 posts)It is not "bashing" to point out that fact. As I said, I don't even really blame them, although I think Kerry's campaign might have learned from what happened to Gore. I think Gore and Kerry would have been good presidents. Obviously lightyears better than the GOP failures who won instead. That makes it twice the shame that their campaign machines mis-understood what was about to happen to them.
What I'm saying is: it is good that Obama's campaign learned something from recent campaign history.

(14,128 posts)IMO, had Gore and Kerry had people like Axelrod, Jarrett, and Pfoffe (sp), they would have been better off. Though Cutter and D. Wade were one of the few bright spots.
IMO, having Clinton people didn't help either, but they always be praised here like Team Obama as the only Dems that know how to fight, everyone else doesn't matter.

(1,568 posts)They were just showing it and seemed to be promoting it. It made me sick to see this crap again - once with Kerry was far TOO MUCH! I hope the Obama team really takes these a$$holes to the woodshed!

(14,128 posts)But that will never stop people from blaming only Kerry while most Dem surrogates were M.I.A.
Only difference is that Obama has a bigger platform, a stronger team of handlers, and Dems like Kerry who have his back.

(26,219 posts)Bin Laden was their meal ticket. Every time an election came up, or an expenditure vote in Congress, or even anything that could be considered 'negative' to the Bush Administration, they would whip out another ooga booga terra terra video to scare/distract the masses.

(59,504 posts)It is hard to argue that ice hockey is not a contact sport - far more than basketball.
The real Obama advantage is that it is well known that Obama ordered the mission to get OBL - and Obama himself is far better known as he is President than Kerry was. The intent of the Republicans was to take away the heroic war service that showed Kerry in a very good light as a strong, brave, caring 25 year old. It was an attack on Kerry's character and integrity.

(33,688 posts)the "war on terra." The boots-on-the-groundspooks found him, the POTUS ordered the op, and now he sleeps with the fishes. Bad for business when considered in Repuke-thought.

(2,500 posts)the entire FauxNews team would have swam out to an aircraft carrier where Bush's Mission Accomplished banner would have been draped over the top deck with Bush giving a play-by-play description of their every move. Of course, that wasn't going to happen because Team Bush was focused on Iraq and had decided Bin Laden was inconsequential.
How did they ever think that an American president could just clam up after delivering the news of taking out al-qaida's #1 guy? As soon as the news broke, every news station in the world was clamoring for details of the raid. Obama gave a minimal amount but they wanted much more. These Seal republicans know that. They hate the president, hate Bin Laden was successfully taken out during a Democratic administration, and are so lowdown they don't mind politicizing the military. Only republicans could be lowdown enough to have started that trend.
