...I dont recall ever being asked for ID at the grocery store, ever. (And sadly for alcohol its happening less and less these days...)
Is there someplace where this actually happens on a regular basis?
I guess maybe for people who write checks, but who writes checks for groceries anymore?

The ID check that freaked me out the most was for buying a glue stick at a kind of general outlet store. This was back when glue sniffing was a thing, so I could understand wanting ID for certain kinds of glue...but a glue stick that is suitable for grade schoolers? Overchecking, I thought, but provided ID and moved on.

(3,276 posts)it was an extra large glue stick, so I still haven't used it up. We'll see what happens if I need to buy another one.

I don't see it a lot, but it does happen occasionally. Typically, it is someone my age (73) or older. They just can't get used to those new-fangled debit cards.

Some stores used to ask for an ID to go along with a debit card but the embedded chips ended that a few years ago.

(779 posts)People still wrote them at grocery stores when I was a young adult, and where I lived then, I was rarely asked for ID. When I moved to the east coast, I would be asked for ID every time. They'd carefully compare my check to the ID and scrawl some things on it, then run it through a machine. It didn't take long for me to switch to other forms of payment. It's been years since I've seen anyone write a check for groceries, and I don't think I've ever been asked for ID for using a debit or credit card for groceries. Some electronics stores, like Frys, will check ID for credit cards.
