Sexism alive and kicking in Florida politics

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-08-12/news/os-lk-lauren-ritchie-sex-discrimination-20120812_1_groveland-city-city-clerk-teresa-begley-council-member

Anyone who thinks that sexism is dying out needs to read this article.

But it does not account for what happened next: The council ignored the results of the study and got down to what they really wanted to do: Raise the pay of male employees.

Council member John Griffin, scanning the audience, remarked: "I see young men out there who might be out digging ditches, cutting grass — whatever nasty job there is. And to me it seems like they're on the lowest rung.
...

Vice Mayor Tim Loucks whined that folks on the upper end of the pay scale — in Groveland city government many happen to be female — have been able to take advantage of educational incentives and that men who are "hard-working and in the nasty jobs" and "struggling to feed families" get "shortchanged."

There's just too much in this article to accurately convey with just a couple of paragraphs, I urge everyone to read the entire thing. Simply amazing - but unfortunately not surprising - that such mentality still exists.

Never mind that the top three most dramatically underpaid positions in the city are all filled by women. No one expressed a jot of concern about them.

Never mind that Groveland's only underpaid manual worker — the lead maintenance technician — is female.

Never mind that nationwide in 2010, female full-time workers made only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men in comparable jobs, a gender wage gap of 23 percent, according to the Institute for Women's Policy Research and the U.S. Census.

Never mind that four of every 10 women in the work force are the equal or main breadwinner in their family.

Four out of ten - that's damned near half! Too bad these misogynists aren't as diligent getting deadbeat dads to pay child support.
