Briefly spoke politics with a co-worker today. I was informed that Romney gave his entire inheritance from his dad to charity, and that he gives at least a million per year to charity while Biden only gives a couple of hundred bucks.
And she also confirmed that by 2020 Medicare will be broke under this admin, but had noooo idea about r&r's plans to gut it and make her pay for the privilege. And she is currently happily collecting.
I didn't even try to reason with this woman; I was too tired, and she obviously believes anything faux tells her.
I just told her to pay attention!
This is the mindset here in GA. They are absolutely convinced Obama is bad for the country, but have no facts at their disposal to prop that up. Oh, and this woman does often speak of "black people", ALWAYS prefaced with "I'm not the least bit prejudiced, but...."

(3,709 posts)I think his inheritance from his father was around $1 Mil, and Romney was already a multi-millionaire by then...so he gave his inheritance to charity.
Not certain, but if Romney gave money away...must have been something in it for him...

(10,624 posts)The Republican party has a vice-like hold on white, Southern voters. And I can't really explain it or understand it. And I don't think they understand me, either.
Most people around here just assume I'm a Republican. I fit all the criteria.
I think the few people who know my real beliefs just assume that it's because I'm kind of an egghead; full of too much "book-learnin" and not enough "common sense".
But really, I just don't want to have to buy health insurance in an unregulated private market when I'm 70 years old. That seems pretty common sense to me.

Honestly, I don't know how willfully ignorant people

(30,947 posts)I am collecting social security and am on Medicare. And there are a lot of Obama supporters here. In fact, none of the really redneck Georgians I have spoken to have referred to blacks as "black people."

I hear that all the time myself from some people in the vicinity of my work. Its a rare event when one of these "I'm not a racist" guys can go all day without making a blatantly racist joke or remark.

(23,743 posts)I guess he could claim that 10% as charity. I don't know how that is categorized in the tax code. But, based on his 2010 income, he would owe the LDS $2.1 million. Maybe that's why he won't release his taxes, maybe he's been short changing the Church of LDS. I am sure Joe Biden's annual income is a fraction of Romney's.
"Mitt Romney released his 2010 tax return on Monday. His total income for the year was listed as $21.6 million, more than one-half of which came from capital gains."
