There is only one reason Santorum is doing well tonight.

He hasn't has his turn as frontrunner, and he hasn't had the associated scrutiny and spotlight yet.

Every Republican frontrunner, once they become the frontrunner, people check them out more closely and when they realize what a jackass they are, they fall in the polls.

It happened to Perry, Cain, Gingrich, Paul.... Each had a stint in the front, just long enough for people to actually find out who they are. and it will happen to Santorum as soon as people realize what a jackass HE is.

Santorum was the "none of the above" vote. He only did well because he wasn't Cain, he wasn't Perry, he wasn't Gingrich, he wasn't Paul, and he wasn't Romney; and he hasn't been in the spotlight yet enough to get the scrutiny that he will soon get.

My prediction... he will be the "frontrunner" for a short time and very quickly people will realize what a homophobic bigot he is, and then he'll fall like all the rest and Romney will be the only one standing in the end.

The joke of it all is that this just shows how unhappy the Republicans are with ALL their candidates. They keep flocking to anyone who isn't all the other choices.

That means they will have low voter turnout in the general election, and they might even flock to a 3rd party candidate if one springs up.

You seem to be assuming that "homophobic bigot" is a disadvantage in the Republican primaries. Jim Lane Jan 2012 #2

I'd say it's somewhere between a clear advantage and an absolute requirement.

Santorum is more likely to collapse from lack of money and organization, not because of his right-wing lunacy (homophobia, support for intelligent design, willingness to bomb Iran, etc.). Positions like that are mainstream Republicanism these days.

Furthermore, I'll say that Santorum lasts a LOT longer than anyone predicts. Primarily because the MSM needs a horse race. The primaries are the playoffs, and the general election is the Superbowl. You just can't skip the playoffs! Think of all the lost revenue from campaign commercials!

Paul never really had a stint at the front, while Bachmann has crazy eyes (-- some of us love women with crazy eyes, but that's neither here nor there, and has nothing to do with politics.)

Santorum's homophobic? There'll have to be something more than that to stop him in the REPUBLICAN primaries.
