White woman pleads guilty to assaulting black teen at pool

A white South Carolina woman has pleaded guilty to assault and battery for hitting a black teenager and telling him to leave a community swimming pool.

News outlets report 38-year-old Stephanie Sebby-Strempel pleaded guilty Monday to the June assault and was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. A Dorchester County sheriff’s report says she told the 15-year-old he didn’t belong at the Summerville pool.

The teen told authorities that he and his friends were leaving when Sebby-Strempel began calling them racist slurs and hit him in the face and chest. Cellphone video shows video Sebby-Strempel yelling and hitting the teen.

Sebby-Strempel later resisted arrest, shoving one detective into a wall and biting another hard enough to break skin. The video was posted online and Sebby-Strempel was deemed “Pool Patrol Paula.”

demonstrates she is capable of serious hate crimes, perhaps she should also have mandatory psychological evaluations done and follow up as necessary. These asshole, bigots and racists get off far too lightly.

If you think $1000 was all she paid, or is going to, then you are falling into the usual "incomplete legal story as reported by a paper" trap.

You can look her up here:
https://publicindex.sccourts.org/Dorchester/PublicIndex/PISearch.aspx

The $1000 fine is for the Assault/Battery 3rd degree charge, to which she pled guilty.

She has two other charges pending of "0256-Resisting / Assault, beat, or wound police officer serving process or while resisting arrest".

Her bond on the three charges was set at:

2018BD1810200883 Surety Bond $25,000.00
2018BD1810200884 Surety Bond $20,000.00
2018BD1810200884 Surety Bond $20,000.00

A bail bond agency is listed, so she paid at least $6500 for that.

So, she's out at least $7500 on the criminal end.

How much do you think the state and the bondsman should take, versus the civil plaintiff here?

In other words, if you think the state should have charged her more, then explain the rationale for cleaning her out before the victim can get a dime?

Personally, I think it makes a lot more sense for the victim to get a crack at whatever she's got via the civil suit, than for the state and the bondsman to cash in on someone else's misfortune.

On edit: I should have said victims, since she bit at least one of the cops

time away from society to reflect on the vagaries of oppression, like in some state penitentiary. Maybe a couple years AND a big assed fine.

The deterrent value of a short stay in prison versus a small fine? C'mon. We all know how devastating even a short prison stay can be -- and she should experience it.

. . .is that instead of changing her attitude she will just find a way to blame the cost on those "dark people".

A couple weeks (perhaps just 5 days) would change her attitude more than a puny 1k fine.

As noted above, she has two other charges pending, arising from her interference and assault on the cops.

In answer to your question, she has two remaining charges of resisting arrest / assaulting an officer pending.
