Nancy Pelosi Just Mocked the President* to His Face in the Oval Office
So much for the Liberal Sellout.
BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
DEC 11, 2018
On Tuesday, right about at lunchtime, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer dropped down the street to the White House to have a chat with the president*. What followed was a piece of video that will live forever as a window into this sludgepot of a political moment. It is not that remarkable if you've ever watched Question Time from any of the various parliaments around the world. (I mean, holy Oliver Cromwell, somebody presented the mace in the House of Commons on Monday.) But, because the American government is greased by tawdry piety and transparently artificial civility, the meeting might as well have taken place in the Octogon.
The single most lasting impression of this altogether remarkable bit of reality-show theater was the look we got into what happens when people tell this particular president* that he can't have what he wants.
Watch as Pelosi tries, not altogether angrily, to explain to him that he doesn't have the votes for the big, beautiful, stupid wall for which, of course, Mexico is going to pay. She says the votes aren't there. He keeps saying he can get them instantly, but that the problem is that he can't get the votes in the Senate. They're both right. He doesn't have the votes in either place. But he runs down all the applause lines that get the rubes all ginned up at his rallies, and Pelosi keeps calmly telling him that, while he's as full of shit as the Christmas goose, nevertheless he and his big, beautiful, stupid wall should get further stuffed anyway.
(You should also notice that, off to one side, Mike Pence clearly has been shot with the trank gun by the Secret Service.)
Even Schumer suddenly discovers a thin vein of iron in his spine and maneuvers El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago into bragging about shutting down the government unless he gets his way, thereby undercutting any political strategy the Republicans in Congress might have been developing to blame a prospective shutdown on the Democrats. That sound you hear is the Republican congressional leadership taking delivery of a barge-load of bourbon.
Welcome to the next two years, and thank nature's god for them.
Pelosi has the president in her pocket and she knows it. (It will dawn on him eventually, too. Maybe.) The House controls the budget and, in January, the Democratic Party will hold the House. Since any argument about Pelosi's being an Accommodating Liberal Sellout should die with the release of this video, she will be the Speakerand, as such, she can shred his administration*. This is the most essential part.

(4,465 posts)Pelosi and Schumer expertly set him up for a fall - to brag and admit that he and he alone will take the mantle , the blame , for a government shutdown if he doesnt get his way .
I dont think most Republicans want a shutdown though anyway.

(53,410 posts)Pelosi and Schumer realized what was happening and adroitly turned the table on him. I think he didnt even realize the setup he walked right into when Schumer got him to admit he wanted to close the government down. I think it probably dawned on him when it was too late.
I think they looked at each other and silently agreed to go ahead and spring the trap. I did see a lot of eye contact between them.

(81,513 posts)TRUMP: No, we don't have the votes, Nancy, because in the Senate we need 60 votes, and we don't have it (ph).
PELOSI: No, no, but in the House, you could bring it up right now.
TRUMP: Yes, but I can't -- excuse me, but I can't get it passed in the House if it's not going to pass in the Senate; I don't want to waste time.
PELOSI: Well, the fact is, you can get it started that way.
TRUMP: The House we could get passed very easily, and we do.
PELOSI: OK, then do it. Then do it.
TRUMP: If I needed the votes for the wall in the House, I would have them in one session; it would be done.
PELOSI: Well, then go do it. Go do it.
TRUMP: It doesn't help, because we need 10 Democrats in the Senate.
PELOSI: No, don't put it on the Senate; put it on -- put it on the negotiation.
TRUMP: OK, let me ask you this, just -- and we're doing this in a very friendly manner. It doesn't help for me to take a vote in the House where I will win easily with the Republicans.
PELOSI: You will not win.

(10,829 posts)too old for the job as Speaker, that we have anyone else who could work this moment as well and with as much steely resolve as Nancy Pelosi. When she says, "You do not have the vote?" You can take that to the bank because Pelosi knows how to whip and count votes down to the last rheumy eyeball.
This was a Master Class performance. She even inspired Chuck Schumer to show his spine. Then that triumphant march from the WH to the press pool?
Boom!
Pelosi slayed it.

(17,920 posts)From now on, that should be the stock example of stupidity. Forget doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Shitler has taken stupid to a whole new level.

Schumer didn't maneuver anyone. Shitler brought it up and kept harping on it. Schumer just followed an age old maxim of politics. If your opponent is destroying themselves, don't interfere.

Trump has no clue how to govern, everything is political theater to him. And Speaker to be Pelosi pinned Trumps ears back in public, because hes clueless at this.

(37,648 posts)HE was trying to show his base that it's the Democrats who have prevented him from getting his wall. Even though Pelosi tried to point out that he has the W.H., the Senate, and the House...Trump drowned her out with his temper tantrum, although he was trying to control himself.
The Democrats are not going to vote for his stupid wall, but they made an offer of $1.2Billion in exchange for a DACA bill (like they offered before). He turned that down again.
I don't think we should give even $1.2 Billion, frankly.
His base will follow him, whatever he says. He is sending out the whistle, telling them what to think and say. They will do it. Today was his message: It's the Democrats' fault. Not his, not the Republicans (the Republicans who won't vote for his wall, either).

(16,963 posts)At what point was Walker arrested? How much evidence did they have? Who arrested him? Why can't some federal officer arrest trump for treason? Why does anyone convey legitimacy to his presence in the Oval Office? How much more damage is going to be done while law enforcement sits on its hands?
I've been patient, we all have. But the writing is on the wall and we need him out. How much crap has he pulled in the last week? How much longer before he steers the ship of state onto a reef? Oh hell, before he sinks it.
