(7,399 posts)In his opinion she was directed prior to ever come here, that if caught, she was to plead guilty and await a spy exchange after serving some time. He claimed that all Russian "assets" that are sent here to seek information while posing as average people are instructed in their training to do that. They will be eventually welcomed back home. I think that is why she pleaded guilty fairly quickly.
Malcolm usually knows his stuff.

(4,937 posts)....but what awaits them when they get back home. I think "welcomed back home" is probably a bit over the top....more likey, you weren't careful, you got caught, you messed up, here drink the tea....or something like that.

(7,399 posts)are being trained. We kicked out a bunch of spies a while back. I think it was Seattle, but not sure. They just sent new ones in to take their place.

(12,164 posts)In his latest podcast, Preet Bharara points out that this matter was referred to the D.C. U.S. Attorneys office. Similar to the Michael Cohen case (which went to SDNY), it could still end up being part of the Mueller investigation.

(3,823 posts)I guess, as long as she only implicates the nincompoops within the GOP and the NRA then she really isn't doing anything to damage either Putin or Russia. I'm sure they've thought of all of the contingencies.

(10,839 posts)Erickson certainly folded quickly unless the FBI and Mueller have been squeezing him over the last few months. With Butina's plea deal, maybe he figured he was thoroughly hosed. The admission itself is huge, even though everyone suspected the NRA had been used as a conduit and Russia-to-GOP money spigot, now you have the connection(s) & confessions that made that happen.
Puzzle pieces coming together in realtime.
I'm betting there will be many sleepless nights for numerous Republican personalities and politicians after this admission.
The long-knives are coming!
Even Putin is putting out the false narrative: Maria who? Butina? I asked around--no one knows who she is.
Hahaha.
This after months of Russian embassies screaming and tweeting for her release.
Lots of mobsters getting very anxious as that puzzle starts to come together and a clear criminal picture materializes.
