SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - The Jewish Community Center in San Francisco was evacuated Thursday morning after police were handling a "situation happening outside the building."
In a post on its website, the JCC said they evacuated the 3200 California Street building at 11 a.m., many of the employees heading to the public library on Sacramento Street.
The JCC said it is closed until further notice.
SkyFox flew over the building, which showed some yellow crime scene tape and a few patrol cars.
Police did not immediately respond to elaborate on the "situation."

New York police later said on Twitter that there was an email being circulated containing a bomb threat asking for bitcoin payment but that no devices had been found.
Police added it appeared the threats were meant to cause disruption and/or obtain money.

(14,076 posts)I really don't understand why people would do that as a hoax. I imagine such a threat is a felony, and if it is, then they're risking extremely serious consequences for no real reason.

(12,344 posts)But there are people out there who do know what they are doing. They concern me.

(62,444 posts)But consider why someone would do it as "not a hoax".
Why would you go through the trouble of making and planting a bomb, and then make a telephone call to tell people it is there?
If you want to cause a panic, evacuation, shutdown, or whatever, all you have to do is to make the phone call without having to go through the trouble of making and planting a bomb which is going to end up harming no one since you called it in.
Or, let me ask a more pointed question:
What proportion of times has a telephoned bomb threat resulted in a bomb actually being at the location in question?
Have you ever actually heard of that happening ever? Maybe it has somewhere, but I really don't see the point of calling to warn people about a bomb you've planted.
But, in this instance, the reason is quite clear - to get paid.

I don't know how I ever missed that story. Fascinating.
That's quite an elaborate incident from 1970. The only other one I can think of which is even close to that is the "pizza bomber" - the guy who had a bomb clamped around his neck and was sent to rob a bank.
There may be a few others, but in general I don't understand the idea of going through the trouble of making and planting a bomb and then calling in a threat. I could understand it if, for example, there was a terror objective and you wanted to make sure that your claim of responsibility is made up front, instead of someone trying to claim credit afterwards. But if that is the point, then you want to make that call right when the thing is going to go off.

And would it be applicable to the various hate/terror groups of the present?

(33,346 posts)Calling in the bomb threat gets everybody scared, ties up resources, allows bad guys to measure various aspects of the response, gets much attention, and generally causes terror. If a real bomb then goes off or is even discovered before it goes off, then the next threat has to be taken very seriously. Terrorism on the cheap.

(25,857 posts)into airports. At first they were taken seriously, with the airport shut down, sniffer dogs brought out, and so on.
After a while, and after there was never a bomb, the response became quite muted. I know about this because I worked at DCA, Washington National Airport, during that time. We got so we simply rolled our eyes at each new threat.
People who phone in bomb threats are deranged in some sort of way. People who actually construct bombs, put them in place, and set them off, are deranged in some other way.
