We recognize December 13th as the birthday of the National Guard. On this date in 1636, the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts.

We recognize December 13th as the birthday of the National Guard. On this date in 1636, the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts. Based upon an order of the Massachusetts Bay Colony's General Court, the colony's militia was organized into three permanent regiments to better defend the colony.

(42,757 posts)3. My father was a member of the Mass State Guard during WWII.
He wasn't active duty military because he worked in a shipyard
where they made Navy vessels and he had five kids at home.

(6,114 posts)4. Based on colonial militias
That date is based on Massachusetts, their first muster. There were earlier ones, but since US history is distorted in favor of New England, you get spurious history like this. The earliest colonial militia was likely in Florida, while Jamestown was essentially all militia.

prior to becoming a nation. Just my personal opinion and, yes, google says I am wrong. But I'm sticking to my opinion.
