Yes, of course we like to play with names. In 2002 and, I think, 2003 Lieberman led the pack. So..
But I've read recently that six month after the midterm - this will be April 2019? is the ideal time to declare. Not too early - to be stale by the time primaries start - and not too late to try to enter a crowded field. Though I kinda remember that Bill Clinton did not officially declare until September of 1991. But this was before "Social Media" and 24 hr reports and twitting cycles.
Anywho... many want a ticket that show diversity. Yes, sure, but I would like to have good candidates who also add diversity, not for the sake of diversity alone.
And yesterday both Heitkamp and McCaskill appeared on PBS NewsHour.

And all of a sudden I am thinking that McCaskill will be great at V.P. nominee. V.P is supposed to be an "attack dog" and Senator McCaskill (still) certainly can hold her own. I think. I've never been a constituent of her.
What say you?
