and blame Democrats for opposing progressive legislation such as this. That was from a time when there were liberals like Everett Dirksen in the Republican Party and conservatives among the Democrats, especially in the South. Now, you can't find the slightest trace of a liberal in the Republican Party. And the true dividing line is the one described by O'Donnell, between liberals and conservatives, who used to inhabit both parties.

Try to make this argument knowing full well their is a difference between party an idealogy; and that both parties have did a 180 degree turn around when it ones to idealogy. Back when the Republican party was established it had a very liberal idealogy, while the Dems where conservative. The founders of the Republican party would be Democrats today. In the 20 century republicans were liberal and so were Northern Dems, while the southern Dems were the conservative ones that left the Democratic party and hijacked the Republican part to what it is today

They attack government, because they do it so badly. I wonder what a list of Republican laws and programs that worked would look like. I'm thinking "lengthy" isn't a word that would be used to describe it.

Republicans (who, as I say, like to hide using terms like "conservative" and "Tea Partier&quot are a mix of political sour grapes and the wealthy. Otherwise good people in the Republican fold have huge political blinders on, and the wealthy and fanatical do their best to make sure the blinders are glued on.

I'll have to try to dig it up. Whoa, it's not what I remembered:

"Henry, last fall, every time your boss got on the stump and said, "It's time for the rich to pay their fair share," I hid under a couch and changed my name. I left Gage Whitney making $400,000 a year, which means I paid twenty-seven times the national average in income tax. I paid my fair share, and the fair share of twenty-six other people. And I'm happy to because that's the only way it's gonna work, and it's in my best interest that everybody be able to go to schools and drive on roads, but I don't get twenty-seven votes on Election Day. The fire department doesn't come to my house twenty-seven times faster and the water doesn't come out of my faucet twenty-seven times hotter. The top one percent of wage earners in this country pay for twenty-two percent of this country. Let's not call them names while they're doing it, is all I'm saying."

Except there's a whole lot of fail there, because it's talking about absolute amounts of money and not percentages. And it assumes that the 1% are actually paying their taxes. And the 1% these days are doing their damnedest with superPACS to get more than 27 votes.

Sun Aug 19, 2012, 12:51 PM
Aug 2012

Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, who was Adolf Hitler's Propaganda Minister in Nazi Germany, originates the idea of "das Grosse Luge" (The Big Lie):

"But the most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly and with unflagging attention. It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over. Here, as so often in this world, persistence is the first and most important requirement for success." It has been paraphrased often as "if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it".

Republicans have mastered that technique, and have literally purchased enough people and media to repeat those "big lies" over and over until they are believed.

It takes a special kind of immunity to avoid being snared by the mantra - it is called common sense.

They are simply not interested in finding out anything factual, anything that might contradict or interfere with...their church, their lifestyle, their prejudices, their friends' opinions, their single "conservative" issue, or any other justifications. Those people are the most frustrating.

It is easier to grasp what draws the haters, the ignorant, the cult-brained, and the just plain stupid. They are the Foxers, the Newters, the Rushers. The birthers. The parrots.

But the ones who have this ignorant-by-choice mentality are the ones who are the real enigma to me.

WHAT HAS GOP DONE FOR

WORKERS?

CLINT C. GOLD
10/24/1999
Tulsa World

Not too long ago, my wife and I attended a TV football
party in south Tulsa. With a lopsided score, the
conversation turned to a livelier subject -- politics. The
crowd was, of course, top-heavy with Republicans. With each
point expressed their faces became more flushed, eyes
bulging a little more and veins popping in their foreheads
as they railed against the liberal programs.

Finally a lone, liberal voice asked: "Will you people
name me one bill your party ever passed to help the working
man of this country?" The question created much din and
clamor, and someone sputtered, "Well, what have the
Democrats done?"

The liberal responded with a few programs and was
interrupted by howling and disdain. He noted that he had
not promised they would like the programs and he asked to
complete his statement -- a difficult task to ask of
Republicans.

He spoke of Social Security; Medicare-Medicaid; Peace
Corps; unemployment insurance; welfare (for the poor and
corporate); civil rights; student grant and loan programs;
safety laws (OSHA); environmental laws; prevailing wage
laws; right to collective bargaining (which brought about
paid medical insurance, paid vacations, pensions, etc.);
workers' compensation; Marshall Plan; flood-disaster
insurance; School Lunch Program; women's rights.

He spoke of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which
established a minimum wage, instituted child labor laws,
and set up time-and-a-half pay for over a 40-hour week.

He mentioned FHA-HUD with its public housing, urban
renewal and 44 million residential homes (before WWII
almost 70 percent of our nation were renters; by the 1970s
this had been reversed). And farm-conservation
subsidies -- USDA programs, Farmers Home Administration (the
bankers didn't want to make rural loans), small
flood-control lakes (more than 3,000 in Oklahoma alone),
rural water districts, rural electricity (REA).

The GI Bill was passed, which the Republicans at the
time bitterly opposed. They were salivating over millions
of returning veterans to hire as cheap labor. More than 8 million have used college benefits, creating millions of
entrepreneurs; most of us had never dreamed of college. For
the unemployed GI, there was $20 a week for 52 weeks to
help get started (a lot of money in those days). The
Veterans Administration provided more than 2 million home
loans.

For the bankers at the football party, it was pointed
out that the liberals saved their industry with the
creation of FDIC and FSLIC, insuring their deposits, and
saved Wall Street with the establishment of the Securities
Exchange Commission.

The oil men came on bended knees to FDR at a time when
East Texas oil was 4 cents a barrel and begged him to save
their industry. He did; prorationing overturned the rule of
capture and the days of flush production were over.
Prorating has served this great industry (and nation)
well.

And the list went on and on, but of course this group
didn't let him get halfway through. He noted they were
weary, inattentive, so again he challenged them to offer up
any Republican legislation examples.

"I'm sure your party has authored one or two comparable
bills from time to time, but I can't think of any, and
apparently you can't either. What it boils down to is this:
the liberals dragged you into the 20th century scratching
and screaming with your heels in the mud, fighting anything
that's progressive, everything that's made this country
great. You Republicans have never understood that the
spending power of blue-collar workers, obtained through
Democrats and unions, is what really made this country
great. You really believe "The Good Life" was obtained from
your own endeavors. You cloak your greed in religion and
patriotism, railing against any form of tax, never
comprehending that these programs have benefitted all of us
and our country."

Well, I almost didn't make it out of the house. My wife
and I didn't even get to see the end of the football game.

If Reps. Steve Largent or J.C. Watts had been there,
perhaps politics would never have come up, only the game
plan ... pity.

Clint C. Gold is former mayor of Moore and a retired
savings and loan executive.

Put 'In God We Trust' on the money and 'under God' in the pledge of allegiance during their brief control of congress during the Eisenhower administration.

Surely that is as impressive by itself as the long list of programs that you point out as 'liberal' accomplishments.

They put God in our lives every day. Whether we want it there or not.

This is a good list. We have allowed the far right to turn "liberal" into an epithet. It's damn past time to reclaim it, the way O'Donnell says in the last line of his statement.

I remember when there were Republicans that would be horrified at what their party has turned into.

When I was a Boy Scout in the '70s, an Indiana Republican State Senator, Richard Shank (sadly passed), counselled me on my Citizenship In The Nation merit badge.

I got to know Senator Shank quite well. He certainly knew his stuff about the workings of government, and he really grilled me before he'd sign off on my merit badge.

He was one of the kindest, most decent men I have ever met. He would not have fit in at all with the current slash-and-burn Limbaugh/Norquist/Beck/Faux Noise GOP.

I asked him why there have to be Democrats and Republicans opposing each other (hey, I was 11 years old!). Senator Shank said, "well, sometimes we don't agree but in the end we have to work things out for the good of the people." I told him I came from a mostly Democratic family. He just smiled and said "when you get old enough, vote for whom you like, but just make sure you vote."

Can you imagine statements like that coming from John Boehner, Dick Armey or Mitch McConnell?

Rich men chafed under it, thinking they weren't getting richer nearly fast enough. They were aided by wealthier old folks who saw their fixed pensions eroded by inflation.

Now we have an economy that doesn't work well for any of us.

Thanks a lot, conservatives.

Unfortunately there was a bipartisan agreement between both parties to get rid of all the liberals, and now the country is run by conservative democrats, and conservative extremist republicans, and America as most of us know it is on track to be flushed down the shitter of failed empires.

And because both parties have fucked everything up beyond repair, who are they going to blame?

They blame it on liberals!

If you look at the graph (in the link below) you'll see that with a few exceptions the democrats controlled both the house and the senate since the 1930's (even though it doesn't go back that far).

The republicans were very used to being the opposition party. They were opposed to a growing government. This is how it should be; we should have a party that is opposed to programs that expand the government. That way there is adequate debate in congress to insure that any new government program has enough debate to
Be certain that it was necessary.

The republicans have been in and out of controll of the house and senate since 1981. It is the responsibility of the party in power to pass legislation. The roles are reversed and the republicans need to lose control of the house so that they can be the opposition party again. Government doesn't work when the opposition party is in power.

And while I agree with O'Donnell that liberals were responsible for the list he's outlined here, to say Republicans objected to extending voting rights, ending segregation, passing civil rights, etc., is disingenuous. There were plenty of Southern Democrats who opposed these measures. It would be more appropriate to say that these measures were opposed by conservatives because parties morph over time. Lincoln - a Republican - ended slavery, after all.

102. The New Deal
Tue Aug 21, 2012, 01:38 AM

The New Deal was the culmination of the longest and most insidious campaign of Communist infiltration and subversion ever. They let in the Irish and the Italians, and, you know.. them... and they brought with them their foreign socialist ideologies and kept on voting for FDR to give them free stuff. Free stuff taken from US!
