Senate unanimously passes Booker bill making lynching a federal crime

"Lynching would be a federal crime for the first time under legislation co-sponsored by New Jersey’s U.S. Sen. Cory Booker that passed the Senate without opposition Wednesday.

"The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018 would outlaw lynching, conspiracies to lynch and attempt to lynch. The measure was sponsored by the three African-Americans currently serving in the U.S. Senate: Booker, D-N.J., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., and 36 other senators.

“For over a century, members of Congress have attempted to pass some version of a bill that would recognize lynching for what it is: a bias-motivated act of terror," Booker said.

“And for more than a century, and more than 200 attempts, this body has failed. Today, we have righted that wrong and taken corrective action that recognizes this stain on our country’s history.”
