The women & men of the Post Office are the government workers I see every day.
Thank you.

That belief lasted a really long time.

(12,265 posts)She was angry when we reported her because a credit card bill went to a neighbor who tried to use it to buy something. We have 4 pieces per day end up somewhere other than our mailbox. I know there are hard working postal carriers, but some of them are awful.

(8,445 posts)We'd get other people's mail, plus I observed him reading mail. My husband at the time traveled a lot and sent the kids lots of postcards. I know the message is right there, but I still didn't think it was proper for him to read them. Maybe if he concentrated on the actual addresses on the mail instead of reading our mail, he would have gotten the mail in the right boxes.
So I can relate to your feelings on this.

(16,672 posts)Lots of post cards were read.. and we look at your drivers license pictures.. at least when the envelope would allow the pic to show in the window. This was years ago when mail was sorted by hand though.
Some of the best laughs of my life were the driver's license pics. We'd put the funny ones up and made sure everyone saw it.
And nope.. I feel no shame over that because I'm sure a couple of mine amused the workers in my local office.

(8,445 posts)Many times. He wasn't even discreet about his snooping.
I don't send much through the mail these days.
My daughter-in-law alerted me about a Informed Delivery thing where you get an email every day that shows an image of what mail you're getting every day. I love it. It doesn't show everything every day, but it's a heads up.

(16,672 posts)We had a coworker who would do that and we finally figured he was looking for check like stuff. Our suspicions were reported and they followed up. Long story short he eventually got fired when the inspectors set him up and caught him removing things from envelopes. We wanted to kick him on the way out.
What a jerk. If you can get a pic of him doing that send it to the postal inspectors instead of the local office. Make sure you tell them he does this all the time.

(8,445 posts)We should have reported it at the time, but life was so chaotic then. Hopefully he got what he deserved.

(25,861 posts)She takes about one day off every other week, and those days the mail will be delivered properly. Otherwise I get mail that should go to others, and I have no idea how often something of mine goes to someone else.
Plus, she NEVER gets my vacation holds correct. I've complained about her more than once. I just wish they'd fire her.

(2,410 posts)I had to change all my bills to electronic payments because of poor carriers. They use the route I'm on to train newbies, and every summer two or three bills don't get delivered. Costme about $90 in late fees two years ago before I switched. Of course, small deliveries are an adventure.

(30,540 posts)my mail carrier is awful, I rarely get my mail. I subscribe to a couple of craft magazines and haven't gotten them for probably six months, I'm beyond mad, I'm livid!!!!

(15,139 posts)until he retired a couple of years ago. Nothing but problems since then. Example: I put in a request for a vacation mail hold. My request was ignored and mail piled up in the box along with notes telling me to remove it. That would have been a neat trick since I was 5 time zones away. The Post Office blamed a carrier who was substituting for the regular guy. I maintain it shouldn't matter who was on delivery duty. A mail hold should not be contingent on who the carrier happens to be on a given day. More recently, my mother's completed and mailed November election ballot was delivered back to her! The envelope has the county election division address on one side in bold print and, on the reverse, in tiny print, the name and address of the voter along with an admonition, "Do Not Deliver to this Address." Well, the carrier delivered the ballot back to that address, and I ended up hand carrying it to a city hall ballot collection box. Have noticed, too, that most days I get one or two pieces of junk advertising mail only, and then once or maybe twice a week will get a bunch of bills and more substantive mail all at once. This lends me to believe mail isn't being sorted every day. Props to those carriers and post offices that strive to provide excellent service. I'm just not seeing it where I live.

(8,445 posts)I miss my previous carrier. This one seems nice enough to talk to, but a few nights ago I watched him on my security camera as he tossed a package up to my door from about eight feet away. It landed in the cat food.
I don't mind when delivery people leave my packages on the steps down by my mailbox, but I don't think throwing a package is acceptable.
I'll probably gift him. I always soften at the last minute.

(7,220 posts)for example: "There was a blue Ford license plate #xxxxxx today in your driveway, in case that was someone not supposed to be there".
But I live in a very rural area.
In my city house, our Postman's name is "asshole" and he leaves notes that say things like "I'm going to have your car towed if you don't park it further from the mailbox"
Guess who gets a $20 Amazon gift card every year and who does NOT?

(60,074 posts)Nor is he allowed to back up. So I can see where he might want enough clearance to pull up and pull out from the boxes.
I was told it is a safety issue. An accident when I was entering my jeep left me permanently disabled. It took me three years to win the right to retire on disability. Two other injured carriers have been waiting for up to seven years. All three of us worked the same route.
The best job is the rural carrier. I loved RR carrying. It was dangerous at times, but always rewarding.

(23,678 posts)service of the United States Postal Service. The mail carriers and all the support employees behind the scenes. I am often amazed at how they manage to accurately deliver the mail. I had an aunt who recently died at 102. She sent me a birthday and Christmas card every year right up to her death. I had a hard time making out her handwriting. But without fail, the cards got delivered to me.

(22,579 posts)so it must be a good route if they are bidding on it by seniority, but I've had a lot of carriers over the years. My previous one retired just before Christmas last year.
Both of my last 2 carriers have said that the Amazon deal saved the USPS. I've gotten FedEx packages via them as well.
My mail usually comes around noon but on Thursday he was here at 7 a.m. in the dark.

(54,770 posts)job, but it added a little to what he made on his small dairy farm.
I also remember the guys who'd walk to deliver mail with the big leather bag over their shoulder. I guess that hasn't worked in years with all the packages and stuff.
I do think today's mail delivers tend to take some shortcuts, maybe forced by management. Still happy with the service and their mission, but I have seen them fill out the form when a signature is required, stick it in the mailbox, without coming to the door. I usually worked at home and would see them pull up and run out "I'm here." They'd always look like a little kid caught doing something wrong.
I now live in a neighborhood where there are central mailboxes, so seldom see the mail deliverer. And, darn, they'll stuff packages in the boxes that it takes a crowbar to get out.
But, I agree with the Happy Holidays for a good government program.

(651 posts)Travis is the best. I can't say enough good stuff about the guy. He has to be a vet because he's too young than the usual types carrying mail. Usually it's an older person. Just a real cheerful person.
Gidney N Cloyd
(19,838 posts)... He was too lazy to put the mail in the box, instead laying it in a clump in the hangers below the house-mounted box that I assume were for newspapers (like a newspaper's been delivered to a door in the last 40 years...). Granted the box was a bit on the small side so the big junk mail would have stuck out so maybe that was the motivation. I'd get home to find envelopes blowing around on the ground. I wound up removing the box and hangers and replacing it with a much larger one so there'd be no choice where the mail could go.
But seriously, this was an anomaly. Most of my carriers have been fine and the folks at the local post office are great.

Smackdown2019
(1,188 posts)Every morning in December, men and women of the USPS start their day knowing their day will be a long tiresome day. For the clerks, earlier start times to hammer out the packages to the carriers or have nerve-wracking customers looking for the cheapest and fastest way to their friends/families. The carriers, start their day the same, but they must endure the harsh elements of December, "freezing rain, snow, cold and short daylight". At the end of their day, they head back to their homes to catch up with news of the day, spend what family time that is available and reheat supper that was cooked hours before. The men and women of the USPS all deserve a very well thank you for being our public servants; not just for the Christmas season, but for whole year.

(81,304 posts)Our carrier where we live now is rather pleasant fellow named. Andrew. He welcomed us to the neighborhood the first time he saw us.
We had a few back in L.A. who were really great. Funny, personable. Female. Id see one of them on her route come by up the street while out walking the dog. Shed holler hello at me and Id holler back. Usually some sort of joke or one-liner about the news would follow and wed both laugh. Always a friendly encounter.

(3,163 posts)The US Postal Service is an independent agency. That means that, while part of the government, it's funding is not part of the general revenue stream of the federal government and the workers are paid by the agency itself and not by federal tax revenue. To be more specific, postal workers are paid by money which comes from USPS revenue. The US legislature periodically allocates funds to the USPS in the form of subsidies, but the agency is intended to be financially self sustaining.
It is an excellent operation which would be self sustaining if it were not for the idiotic pension funding requirement imposed by Congress. Any comparisons between it and UPS/FedEx are ridiculous, because the latter does not even pretend to accomplish the mission of delivery to every single person in the nation. In fact, both UPS and FedEx pass off some deliveries to the USPS because the delivery is too remote to be profitable for them.

(4,379 posts)Imagine working for Trump. Thats how it is working for postal management. I am not kidding.
Tens of thousands of the most dedicated mail carriers were driven out of the post office. Thousands of routes were eliminated. The carriers that survived had to absorb all those routes. They are now all micro managed down to the minute. Some days there are not enough carriers to deliver the mail. Routes are broken up into pieces and given to all the carriers. It's a fucking joke.
Customer service was severely damaged by management. They will not let mail carriers do their job. Like the rest of America, the postal service went fucking insane.
