DC Attorney General Karl Racine on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Facebook, accusing the social-media giant of unfair and deceptive practices that violated consumer privacy and led to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The first lawsuit of its kind in the United States, the move could result in billions of dollars worth of fines for the company and pave the way for states around the country to file similar complaints.
Facebook failed to protect the privacy of its users and deceived them about who had access to their data and how it was used, Racine said in a statement. Todays lawsuit is about making Facebook live up to its promise to protect its users privacy.

(9,708 posts)but had to sell the private info for more money. Many lessons to be learned here, one of which will be FB gone. I'll miss my games and interacting with old school chums and the day to day stuff with my son. Sad.

(61,695 posts)0.50% quarter-to-quarter increase or they declare the stock "mature," a kiss of death. I know of a software company that laid off its most mature and productive engineers, leaving their customers in the lurch, for these increases. MBAs who don't understand the business running a tech firm.

(32,641 posts)This lawsuit isn't about that, but there is lots of hurt to go around.
They were notified to stop enabling and they just denied everything.

(638 posts)Let Facebook die. It's a menace and this issue with it has been a feature not a bug from the start. It's how they were able to become so popular by not using ads for so long. Hopefully a better social network will be developed or Twitter changes it's business model so as to survive the first round of regulations.

(2,750 posts)When all this BS started with them using an ad blocker while on Facebook made the site unbearably slow to use. That went on for months to the point I just stopped using it. I'll be damned if I am pulling my blocker down
However, I checked again a couple months ago and it seems to be working fine with the blocker on. Not sure if adblock found a work around or what?!

(638 posts)I only use it sparingly to like things and to keep up with people I can't contact normally. I've noticed ads on every third or fourth post. I think they need to increase revenues as much as possible now that they expect these lawsuits to take a bite out of their operating profits.

(73 posts)Social media site is LinkedIn. A couple years ago when I was considering changing jobs, I joined and paid the subscription for premium benefits. I was shocked I could see who looked at my profile. NEVER stalk someone on LinkedIn!!

(37,648 posts)every month. In a free account, you can see who a couple of them are, but not the rest. Premium member identities are never divulged in checking out profiles.
I don't regard LinkedIn that big a deal because the purpose of LinkedIn is precisely FOR people to see you, who you are, your background & education...to further your career or get a job. So LinkedIn people want people to look at their accounts, usually.
Google, OTOH, (if you have a Google account) follows you wherever you go on the internet. It connects all the dots. If yu post anonymously to an article online, Google knows that and links it w/your Google account.
I pay bills electronically. Unbeknownst to me, Google kept all my credit card information in some sort of special account services location, without notifying me. I only found out when it started verifying my credit card every time I paid a bill, and would charge $1 (the $1 was just to verify, and was removed upon verification). Yikes! I found out where that "services" page was and opted out. But I still see messages from Google when I pay online, so I'm sure it's keeping that information somewhere. It's scary and invasive.
I may check into switching to Foxfire, but I don't have time to make a big change right now. And Chrome works so well otherwise.
