(129,095 posts)but contractors are not included. The Senate did just that earlier this evening but the House will need to vote on that and the President will need to sign it. Departments/agencies will select people who are deemed "essential" to continue to work and others will be furloughed.
The only way contractors get paid is if -
1.) their prime contractor pays their employees out of pocket
2.) the contractors are funded by something other than appropriated ("BA"/budget authority) funds - i.e., user fees or other arrangements with public/private partnerships (e.g., state-funded), grants, etc.
Otherwise, the contractors are SOL and if it hasn't happened already, those departments/agencies being impacted have already sent (or are preparing to send) "STOP WORK" notices to them.
ETA- the Senate literally just gaveled into recess until noon tomorrow, so both chambers are "publicly" done for tonight (although supposedly there are people working behind the scenes).

(115,732 posts)or whether you need government services. Social Security and Medicare will be paid as usual. You might not be able to get a passport or a new SS card or other service. Military members will be paid because they are funded by an appropriation for the fiscal year starting in October but the Coast Guard won't because they are funded through DHS. "Essential" personnel like air traffic controllers will be working but won't be paid until the government starts up again. Non-essential personnel will be furloughed.
(btw, it's "there" and "lives".)

(6,110 posts)Federal workers and contractors will get paid fully when shutdown ends.
They will enjoy the paid vacation. Non-critical activities such as national
parks and passports will not be available. TSA will be operating as usual.
I base all this on having lived through previous shutdowns.

(33,643 posts)Everyone there camping or whatnot gets rounded up and kicked out?

(6,110 posts)National parks were temporarily closed. I guess they are classified as non-critical.

(46,192 posts)It must be passed by the Senate, House and then signed by Trump.
Are you 100% sure Trump will sign back pay if it is passed?

(6,110 posts)Trump is unpredictable, but I have a hunch all government workers will get paid
because it is not their doing why there is government shutdown.

(46,192 posts)You seem to think your personal anecdotes are laws, apply to everyone.
You're wrong.

(6,110 posts)pass bills for contractors or any one else to get paid, who actually did some work for the government.
I can't think of any instance when the US Government stiffed anyone who contributed work or material to the government. Which is the reason US Treasuries still sell on the market in spite of the $22 Trillion debt for which we can not pay off the principle. So rest assured, every one will get paid.

(42,282 posts)But seven appropriations bills have not been signed. The departments whose activities would be at risk during this shutdown would be the department of Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Homeland Security, Interior, State, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, plus some smaller agencies.

(1,002 posts)I worry that if HUD is shut down, my landlady won't get her payment for HUD's part of my rent which is now covered by my Section 8 voucher. I've paid my part of my rent, but if the government reneges on its part? That's $400.00 plus. I live off my tiny social security check and I manage to stay indoors thanks to my housing voucher. I don't think my landlady would kick me out, but I can't help but feel anxious about it.
