1985: The beginning of one man's campaign against US democracy and the Truth
An Australian media baron on Wednesday swore an oath of allegiance to the United States and became Citizen Murdoch.
Rupert Murdoch, 54, became a U.S. citizen along with 185 other people at a 15-minute ceremony at U.S. District Court in New York. By losing his alien status here, Murdoch moved closer to gaining control over a major group of independent television stations.
In May, Murdoch disclosed plans to become a U.S. citizen as part of his planned $1.55 billion acquisition of six TV stations, including WFLD in Chicago and WNEW in New York City, from Metromedia Inc.
As a foreigner, Murdoch would have been prevented by the Federal Communications Commission from acquiring more than a 20 percent interest (or more than a 25 percent stake through a foreign holding company) in a U.S. broadcasting company.
The FCC is considering Murdoch`s application for the Metromedia TV station licenses. To comply with the FCC`s limits on media cross-ownership, Murdoch said he plans to divest his Chicago Sun-Times and New York Post newspapers.
