The government is literally shut down as Republicans get ready to hand over the House to Democrats.By Amanda Terkel and Arthur Delaney POLITICS 12/22/2018 12:02 am ET Updated 12 hours ago
We are going to hit the ground running, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) declared, saying Donald Trump earned a mandate to push his agenda forward as president.
We would like to see the country go in a different direction and intend to work with him to change the course for America, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declared.
Two years later, the Republican dream is left in shambles. And voters were clearly not impressed with what the GOP Congress accomplished with its one-party rule. In January, Democrats will take control of the House.

(11,569 posts)Talk is cheap and when actually given the reins of power in the government, the Republicans have failed miserably. Their dysfunction, starting at the top with Trump, is on full display and we have become the laughingstock of the world. Perhaps this is why they prefer authoritarianism so much--they don't have to negotiate a thing.

(26,044 posts)...and, from the rhetoric Im hearing from the Senate, it appears the current strategy is to lambaste Democrats and pressure dissident Republicans to invoke the nuclear option. Until the new Congress is seated, theres still every possibility that Repugs will opt to eliminate the filibuster and send the House bill to Trump.

(1,822 posts)everything they believe and stand for really dont mesh with being the party in power. When Dems are in power they can unite behind keeping the gov't from expanding power, reducing spending, etc, all that. When they actually have to do something instead of hiding behind lofty catch phrases and have to come up with a plan of how to better things and how to actually cut spending, they cant do it.
