Shutdown Day 7: Trump Reportedly Slashes Border Wall Funding Demand in Half, Dems Won't Budge

Shutdown Day 7: Trump Reportedly Slashes Border Wall Funding Demand in Half, Dems Won’t Budge

-snip-

According to a report from Fox News, President Donald Trump has come off of his demand for a $5 billion budget allocation for a Southern border wall. Instead, he is asking Democrats for $2.5 billion.

Democrats, reportedly, are holding the line at zero.

“We put the last offer on the table,” acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told reporters outside the White House Friday morning. “In a negotiation…you don’t make an offer, and then make another offer, and another offer. We made an offer last Saturday night, and they told us they’d get back to us by the end of the week. They got back to us last night and said, ‘We’re leaving.'”

Drew Hammill, the deputy Chief of Staff for House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), said Democrats are holding firm on their stance not to fund the wall.

I can see him whining a lot. He had to cancel his NYE plans (boo-hoo, fuck you and your profits) for Mar-A-Fucko.

They know the PR backlash they're getting right now is ugly. Trump's approval is dropping and disapproval is rising since this started.

He is a shitty negotiator. He was going to cave to the original bill that both democrats and republicans approved, and then lie to his base about it being a win. But before he could do it Coulter anticipated the lie was coming and called bullshit on Trump instead. So now he needs something more that Coulter won't shoot down first. He won't get that from the democrats.

He doesn't seem to understand "The Art of the Deal," at all. Instead of demanding pennies for the wall like an aggressive panhandler, he should offer up something the Democrats want. It doesn't even occur to him to do that.

One, to your point, he's trying to get something while offering nothing. Secondly, he's attempting to negotiate with zero leverage.

He has become so accustomed to lying and cheating and strong arming he really doesn't have a clue what real negotiating entails.

Make intransigent demands until he wears down the other side, then when they agree to his demands, back away and make further demands. The problem with that strategy is that once the other side has seen that trick, they don't "negotiate" so much anymore, and they insist that all demands be reduced to writing so there isn't any wiggle room.

Trump's second trick is to just leave off and go contract with someone else. The problem with that is (obviously) that there isn't another Congress in the next block or the next town to treat with. As president, he's got one and only one group to work with.

about re-starting the government until he makes a deal with Mexico to pay for the wall, in advance.
