Boca Raton cop fired over racist remarks gets 'last chance' to save job

A Boca Raton cop who was fired last spring over racist banter, offensive jokes, use of the N-word and lying while under oath has gotten his job back.

It is Jeremy Codling’s “last chance to salvage his employment,” according to a disciplinary agreement that demoted him from sergeant to officer, downgraded his pay accordingly and required him to write a letter of apology to the black officer who initiated the complaint that led to Codling’s termination.

Nine days after Codling was fired, investigators found pornographic images on his department-issued laptop. They also discovered a succession of pornographic websites that someone had viewed while logged on as Codling, records show.

The 40-year-old first joined the Boca Raton Police Department on May 23, 2005.

He lost his job March 5 after an internal investigation found that he was guilty of conduct unbecoming a police officer, harassment by making inappropriate and offensive comments and being untruthful while being questioned under oath about his behavior, records show.

...

“I want you to know that I am sorry for offending you with anything I may have said or done; It was never my intent to upset you,” Codling wrote. “Hopefully we can both move forward and have a good working relationship at the Boca Raton Police Department.”

...

When Codling was fired, he earned $47.88 an hour. Under the terms of his disciplinary agreement, his pay was cut to $45.05, documents show.

When Codling returns to the force, he will be required to attend sensitivity training.

Hopefully this mercy translates to him changing his life. Who knows? That's a lot of cash per 40 hour week. But, no raises for the guy in the shop or flipping burgers.
One things for sure, when the guy in the high office acts like a belligerent 24/7, others feel justified in being ugly as well.

I've worked w cops most of my adult life. There are so many good guys. Usually you have to catch them when they aren't around the others on 'the force' to really see that though. They're out there, but, when the crowd is surly, usually the individuals are surly too. Being mean and ugly is easy, living kindly and civilly is much harder bc it takes cogitation and follow through. Hope he remembers his "second chance' when he's "policing".
Happy New Year Blue.

Somehow I don't believe your sincerity, since you were being forced to write it to secure your job. And just what did you do besides your racist banter, offensive jokes, use of the N-word???

But hey you get your job back which I find unfortunate as I'm pretty sure the officer you insulted must feel. I guess you weren't looking at kiddie porn on your department issued laptop, at least it wasn't mentioned what kind of porno you are into.

thing now a days. I get it w the dept laptop, but, this framing of people bc they dare watch people having sex is more and more unsettling. Who cares? Literally EVERYBODY w a phone or computer has looked at it. And why not? We're human. Probably the most beautiful thing left about being human, and it's demonized. Especially when folks are in trouble, as though a caveat.
Like I say, I get it about a work computer, I agree, but, it's getting to be like a secondary crime in these stories anymore. If it's not allowed, why are the dept computers not filtered?

and again it wasn't mentioned if it was adult porn or underage porn (which isn't porn at all since most of these kids are forced into it) so who knows. We certainly don't since the article didn't mention it.

And yes, the department computers should have filters on them since the officers can't keep from looking at porn while on duty.

hundred(s). While ANY is too many, nothing is ever perfect when humans are involved. Plenty of people constantly refer to things like you reference, but the reality is absolutely quite different. And I always say, who do THOSE SAME PEOPLE call when they are being attacked by a perpetrator or having another kind of emergency situation. You spewing your venom and misrepresenting police officers is the BIGGEST PROBLEM and offers absolutely nothing for a solution. Hardly gullible and truly informed! Good day!

Cops should be WAY BETTER than any other job because they have total power over people.

The solution is for the police to FIRE bad cops and no other police force hire them.

If you are denying The Blue Wall Of Silence is real then no need to discuss further.

The man has been found to lie under oath. Every defendant in any in case in which he is involved is going to bring that up. Prosecutors are going to have a hell of a time with that.
