But I never hung out anywhere. So the phone for me doesn’t replace social activities.

In our 60's. I have made friends both here and last place taking Olli classes at universities. It stands for Osher Life Long Learning Institute. Not all universities have it but I have been lucky. I go to the one at Southern Oregon University now.

It costs $125 for the whole year (here every place is different) and as many classes as you want to take everything from history to hiking and travel. No homework except the class on teaching writing a book.

Its for people over 50. I met the good friend I have now at a hiking class. Gives you something in common.

For younger folks try a bookclub, I made a bunch of fun girlfriends at my one in WA, my daughter in her 30's joined a less serious bookclub and they have a blast its more social and she met friends there.

People are less likely to engage with churches, and the malls are empty in many places. Sports stadiums report declining attendance. So how and where are people interacting? Especially, young people?

These places aren't formal, but that's where young people go. Old people, too.

Also, protest marches. Indivisible has something going on frequently. And the people you meet are likely to be like-minded with you.

In my experience, if you want to meet people, walk your dog.

No dog? Borrow one! You'll both enjoy it.

Add in: Volunteering.

Making eye contact with people and smiling. Opening doors. Talking to strangers.
(I live in a rural area so this might be harder in a big city.)

none of which form a coherent sentence, much less a cogent argument.

What does “local hangouts have been replaced with screens” have to do with local staffing rates for physicians? What do either of those things have to do with single moms? And just exactly what is it that’s “coming faster than we want to believe”?

Full of wonderful locals. Then when I make my trips just a little south there is even more. There is a palm scanner and TV in my doctors office. A staff member assists you with the scanner.

Then again, I’m just making an assumption that’s what you are referencing.
