Alabama Sheriff Pocketed $1.5 Million In ICE Funds For Immigrant Food

An Alabama sheriff personally banked $1.5 million in federal funds allocated to feed undocumented immigrants arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, according to an investigation by AL.com.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin collected the money over a three-year period beginning in 2011, AL.com reported. The funds were provided as part of a federal contract to use Etowah County Detention Center to hold hundreds of undocumented immigrants who face federal legal proceedings over their immigration status and any alleged crimes.

In addition, Entrekin also admitted at a news conference in early 2018 that he kept $750,000 in food funds from 2015 to 2017. He purchased a beach house valued at $740,000 soon after, The Birmingham News reported.

Alabama state law allows sheriffs to keep unspent money allocated for inmate food. The Southern Center for Human Rights says that the policy “invites public corruption.” Critics say the state law allowing sheriffs to pocket taxpayer funds should not apply to federal money.

Even if it does allow sheriffs to keep unspent money, there should be a dollar limit, it should be counted as income and subject to income taxes. Alabama isn't Malibu, California. I'm sure his $750K beach house is a mansion.

But it shows why states like Alabama are so backward on many issues. The law gets begs for corruption, my guess is sheriffs all over the state trim off funds and shortchange prisoners.

Truly horrid law that need to be changed. Follow normal budget procedures, if a sheriff does not spend allocated funds on prisoner upkeep, then that sheriffs budget should be cut by that amount the next year, with adjustments for prisoner population changes.

Unbelievable that they'd have a law on the books allowing them to keep unspent monies allocated for inmate food.

Gee, what could possibly go wrong there?

I'm pretty sure this is a common thing across the nation. It probably derives from a long time ago when sheriffs were not compensated as full-time employees of their county.

I'm just guessing on that part. But I KNOW I've heard this same thing before and it was within the law.

"Alabama state law allows sheriffs to keep unspent money allocated for inmate food."

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaaa waaaa WHAT????????????????????????????????????

HOW CAN THAT BE A LAW??????????????

Who would VOTE for that????????????????? Who would decide that taxpayer money is just best GIVEN AWAY to a sheriff instead of put back in the state coffers?? What taxpayer would not be OUTRAGED to know their dollars are making millionaires out of public servants. I can't believe ANYBODY no matter what party you support could POSSIBLY be on board with this!

Oh Alabama
The devil fools
with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
is all that it meant.

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks
tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don't it take you down home?

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama.
Can I see you
and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land
I come to you
and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
to help you along
What's going wrong?
