thinking of all the federal workers who certainly cannot celebrate anything.
The other day one of them said that she had to postpone a knee surgery because would not have the co-pay.
They have been collecting several millions for "the wall" on GoFundMe. How about giving these millions to the federal employees, many of them will not get their pay back?
What a horrible person he is. What a way to start a new year. May this be your last one.

My theory is since NYC is such a Blue City that they were extra happy and wanted to celebrate because of the Blue-Wave to help stop trump in 2019.

(4,611 posts)fantastic in leading the fight against Trump (as well as on many other important non-Trumpian fronts). She is returning to her previous position as Solicitor General. Our NEWLY elected Attorney General, Letitia James, promises to be just as active and tenacious. This is all crucial as Trump and Family are from New York so our jurisdiction is important.

(25,868 posts)I've been impacted by a strike. And even though a strike isn't exactly the same thing, mainly that striking employees NEVER get back the wages lost, and federal employees, at least so far always have, I know what it's like to be involuntarily unemployed.
I do feel as though I have to repeat that in the past federal employees have always gotten back pay, because the two times I was on strike (and neither time was it my group, and so I was out on strike for another employee group) I lost pay. I never got it back. I was involuntarily unemployed and had no hope of recovering lost pay.
And while I do have reasonable sympathy for the federal employees currently on shut down, they are not going to lose anything remotely resembling what union employees usually lose during a strike.
Really. Every single time there's been a government shut down, the federal employees lose not one penny of salary. Yes, there may be a week or two delay in pay, but honestly, if you're a federal employee and can't survive a week or two, I honestly have trouble being sympathetic.

(21,718 posts)The orange buffoon won't necessarily sign the bill that needs to be done for the federal workers to get the back pay. And the contractors who have been out of work because of the shutdown will almost certainly not be paid. Remember, Donald is cheap unless the money is going to him.

(86,690 posts)mostly those with federal employee collective bargaining status get paid for not working, many will not be, like all those seasonal employees at the NPS and USFS and BLM and the like. Probably a good 50% or more will not see pay for not being able to work. Those who have a position with furlough status will get paid and those who have to work during the shutdown will get paid, the rest... not.

Each project has to completed within a certain time frame, so if any deadlines are passed while shut down, I just lose.
