Those bullets gotta land somewhere. I'll never forget the year one of those idiots' bullets landed on the roof of my car, leaving a dent. And I was standing right next to my car. That bullet could have killed me!

And culture varies by ethnicity and by geography and income/education. (I don't take the simplistic view that 'culture' is just food and folklore, festival and fashion.)

Where I grew up, not a firework to be had apart from 7/4. Suburban Baltimore.

When I lived in Oregon, again, not a firework outside of 7/4. And by that I don't mean 7/3 or 7/5.

Los Angeles, some New Year's fireworks. It was a mostly white neighborhood with some Latino population. It was mostly Latinos with the fireworks.

Rochester, NY? Again, back to Oregon and Baltimore-suburb levels of firework use.

Houston?

Last night I was thinking, at 1 a.m., that it still sounded like a major WWII battle was occurring not that far away.

It was pretty bad Xmas eve, too. Some one called the fire department--don't know if it was a mistaken incident or if something was set on fire.

It wasn't so bad during the recession. Now people have more money and need to show they have money they can waste. And, every year, hurt some kids.

Plus I think some people like explosions and blowing stuff up on any day of the year.

edit: A lot of people in this country actually... on reflection.

they shoot guns. When I was a kid we shot off shotguns so as not to damage anything.

I live 5 houses from Detroit. At midnight, Detroiters fire whatever guns they have into the air for about 20 minutes. It's pretty crazy!

I like neither being used, but lots of people love the noise to chase out the old year and welcome the new one concept, better fireworks than guns.
