I am taking a good, hard look at Elizabeth Warren today...

I don't think a woman candidate is that problematic. We got some of that out of our system back when HRC ran. And actually won the popular vote.

Does anyone think her being from MA is a drawback? I struggle with that a bit. Are we going to hear "Massachusetts liberal!" screamed over and over again? If so, does that matter? Are people so fed up and scared by Trump that all but his hard core will want him OUT?

Plus, we'll have her golden retriever in the WH! It would be a pleasure to see that dog of hers romp around the White House!

Republicans will demean any dem candidate's looks and personalities because they can't talk about the issues honestly, only lie about dem's stances. I'm glad the first candidate to announce is a true progressive as they stand for what most Americans claim they want according to all the polls on the issues. We've got some great candidates coming out for president.

but rather how the "swing voter" votes. Largest group of voters are now calling themselves "Independent". How they perceive our candidate will determine outcome. I've heard my Senator Warren when she came to our town in the summer of 2017. She is very much focused on issues I think will play well with the "Independents".

Bernie also is lazor focused on the issues and it is that focus that will get us to the White house in 2020.

I'm concerned about the age of either of these leading candidates....I'm 71 and know how age can suck the energy out everything you do....and will be looking to see if a younger candidate, say Beto, can deliver a clear, focused picture of how they will lead the country.

Immediately attack back.
It doesn't need to be true, it doesn't even need to make any sense, but he responds to an attack in seconds or minutes. With President Obama it was always a measured pause and a careful, accurate and well thought out response, with Trump it's a nasty tweet attacking the person, often in minutes after they say something. It works; he regains the tempo of the attack, like a fighter throwing a feint - even if the tweet is utter bullshit, it is OUT there as a response within the same news cycle. Our candidate is going to HAVE to match, or master, that tempo; careful and thoughtful is bringing a knife to a gun fight.

A lot. And I won't count her out for my primary vote at this point. But my question is whether she or anyone from her generation does enough to pull in unlikely voting blocks. It seems to me that you have youth, Hispanics, and African Americans who will all vote reliably blue and if one of these groups shows up in uncharacteristically high numbers... especially in a few key states like MI, WI, and PA... then we will win. Obama got young people and blacks in high numbers and cruised. I am starting to think Beto could do similar with kids and Hispanics... Who does Liz get you besides the folks who already hate Trump? Suburban moms? They are probably voting anyway. Of course she's a policy wonk, but does she have the charisma to appeal to low information voters who may not be ideologically grounded? I think that was part of Hillary's problem.

Out of the female candidates I believe Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar would be stronger general election candidates. Out of the male candidates Beto, Biden, and Cory Booker would be stronger candidates.

Trump is a troll. He exists to anger people. He who angers you controls you. That's a hard lesson to learn. The whole DNA gambit played into Trump's hands. She should have said it part of our family folklore that we have Cherokee heritage and left it at that instead of taking and publicizing a test that showed she had less than two percent Cherokee heritage.

Again, I don't want to be misconstrued. I like all our candidates. I just believe some are stronger general election candidates than others.

Elizabeth Warren would make a great Attorney General if Massachusetts didn't have a Republican governor.

Anyone out there who doesn't understand this completely by now, please raise your hand, and I will make sure that a proper caregiver is sent to your house to tie your shoes and make sure that you wipe and wash your hands after using the toilet.

Tue Jan 1, 2019, 04:54 PM
Jan 2019

If we've learned nothing since 2016 we need to not skip over the fact that women candidates work for us. Good candidates regardless of gender first but female candidates really churn up the grassroots and turnout.

Look at the 2017 Virginia General Assembly - the Dems came within drawing a lot from taking over the House. THAT is insane even in what statewide is a blue state (Obama Hillary Kaine Warner Webb MacAuliffe Northram etc). Them look at Abigail Spanberger taking a house seat that used to be an easy 60% for the Republicans. Virginia is geographically expansive and very reflective of the country's demographics and varying cultures. There are really 5 different Virginia's.

As for Warren - very smart, very engaging and likeable, she'd be a great candidate and an almost perfect counter to Trump. As for the negatives - the Pocahontas thing is like to moths to a flame. It will expose they inbreds and zap them in the eyes of the middle especially women.

...who will all get tarred as "California liberals" in their turn. That's just a given.

Am looking forward to this year.

Happy New Year, CTyankee! Health and happiness to you!

if we want to win. Like it or not - there are more people in the country than we at DU. And her style can be abrasive to people. Hope we can be open enough to say that. We will have many many candidates, most of which we agree with.

She is intelligent and substantive on policy.

FWIW she proved in 2016 that she knows how to get under Trump’s skin.

She is definitely on my shortlist.

I supported her from the beginning of her 1st campaign for Senate, and I continue to support her. I am proud that she is my Senior Senator. The Saturday after she won the nomination a rally was held on my city's common. All of the nominees were there as was former Governor Michael Dukakis. All had their chance to speak, but Elizabeth Warren was the headliner. After an event like this, a candidate typically does the rope line, presses the flesh, and heads off to the next event in another city or town. Not Elizabeth Warren. She stayed to meet with the citizens one on one. Notice, I did not say "voters". I saw her talking to a 12 year old boy. And when Elizabeth Warren talks to you, one on one, her focus is totally on you, even if you are a 12 year old boy who won't be able to vote for her until she runs for reelection. That's the Elizabeth Warren I've seen.

That said, I wish she wouldn't run for President. I like her just fine in the Senate where she isn't hampered by term limits or political hacks who would try to tame her. She doesn't need to be tamed!!!
