General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am taking a good, hard look at Elizabeth Warren today...
I don't think a woman candidate is that problematic. We got some of that out of our system back when HRC ran. And actually won the popular vote.
Does anyone think her being from MA is a drawback? I struggle with that a bit. Are we going to hear "Massachusetts liberal!" screamed over and over again? If so, does that matter? Are people so fed up and scared by Trump that all but his hard core will want him OUT?
Plus, we'll have her golden retriever in the WH! It would be a pleasure to see that dog of hers romp around the White House!

Right now I am just hoping we'll MAKE it to 2020...

(12,448 posts)I want to see who actually declares before I make a primary decision, and maybe wait awhile after that. We have a strong potential Democratic field; I will of course support, work for, and vote for any Democrat who wins the nomination.

(1,201 posts)Republicans will demean any dem candidate's looks and personalities because they can't talk about the issues honestly, only lie about dem's stances. I'm glad the first candidate to announce is a true progressive as they stand for what most Americans claim they want according to all the polls on the issues. We've got some great candidates coming out for president.

(115,783 posts)Trump will yell "Pocahontas!" because that's all he's got, but it's stupid. So is "Massachusetts liberal," which IMO isn't even a bad thing. No matter who runs, they will all have flaws, and the GOP will try to exploit them. I like her but I like others too, so I'm just waiting to see who else is seriously running before I decide on a favorite.

(4,833 posts)but rather how the "swing voter" votes. Largest group of voters are now calling themselves "Independent". How they perceive our candidate will determine outcome. I've heard my Senator Warren when she came to our town in the summer of 2017. She is very much focused on issues I think will play well with the "Independents".
Bernie also is lazor focused on the issues and it is that focus that will get us to the White house in 2020.
I'm concerned about the age of either of these leading candidates....I'm 71 and know how age can suck the energy out everything you do....and will be looking to see if a younger candidate, say Beto, can deliver a clear, focused picture of how they will lead the country.

(4,168 posts)One that comes to my mind is the last time I was called a bitch is " You say that like it's a bad thing." Keep a smile on your face and it will take away their bluster.
"Is that the best you can do?" Then stifle a laugh.
What else can we use?

(3,161 posts)Immediately attack back.
It doesn't need to be true, it doesn't even need to make any sense, but he responds to an attack in seconds or minutes. With President Obama it was always a measured pause and a careful, accurate and well thought out response, with Trump it's a nasty tweet attacking the person, often in minutes after they say something. It works; he regains the tempo of the attack, like a fighter throwing a feint - even if the tweet is utter bullshit, it is OUT there as a response within the same news cycle. Our candidate is going to HAVE to match, or master, that tempo; careful and thoughtful is bringing a knife to a gun fight.

(26,331 posts)I like Elizabeth Warren a lot. But lets not pretend supporting republicans through the 70s, 80s, and 90s is even in the same ballpark as Bernie supporting and caucusing with Democrats as an Independent his entire career. Not to mention being a founding member of The Progressive Caucus.
Try again.

(11,635 posts)A lot. And I won't count her out for my primary vote at this point. But my question is whether she or anyone from her generation does enough to pull in unlikely voting blocks. It seems to me that you have youth, Hispanics, and African Americans who will all vote reliably blue and if one of these groups shows up in uncharacteristically high numbers... especially in a few key states like MI, WI, and PA... then we will win. Obama got young people and blacks in high numbers and cruised. I am starting to think Beto could do similar with kids and Hispanics... Who does Liz get you besides the folks who already hate Trump? Suburban moms? They are probably voting anyway. Of course she's a policy wonk, but does she have the charisma to appeal to low information voters who may not be ideologically grounded? I think that was part of Hillary's problem.

I agree, we need someone who will GOTV. Should Beto decide not to run for POTUS, maybe Warren should tap him as VP early in her campaign, so people can get excited about the TEAM. I know that's not how it's done tradtionally, but Trump pretty much fucked tradition in the ass.

Also the video was an extremely well-done look at her family and very compelling. And if you are basing your dismissal of her on this one thing after all she has doen for consumers and much more than no one should be impressed by your reasoning.

(99,710 posts)Out of the female candidates I believe Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar would be stronger general election candidates. Out of the male candidates Beto, Biden, and Cory Booker would be stronger candidates.
Trump is a troll. He exists to anger people. He who angers you controls you. That's a hard lesson to learn. The whole DNA gambit played into Trump's hands. She should have said it part of our family folklore that we have Cherokee heritage and left it at that instead of taking and publicizing a test that showed she had less than two percent Cherokee heritage.
Again, I don't want to be misconstrued. I like all our candidates. I just believe some are stronger general election candidates than others.
Elizabeth Warren would make a great Attorney General if Massachusetts didn't have a Republican governor.

(11,257 posts)I want to see the messages they run on and the organization they put together.
2008 was a perfect example. I would have happily supported Hillary had she won the nomination, but to me Obama had the better organization and better message. In 2016, Hillary learned from that experience and put together a top notch campaign.

(4,429 posts)I don't know that she'll get the kind of traction she wants -at least for the top of the ticket. But if she were on a Beto/Warren ticket - I'd be thrilled. I think she's smart, effective, and fearless.
I still don't think she has that 'je ne sais quoi' that will overwhelm the country and get the kind of support she'd need to win the Presidency.
But I welcome her to the show! Her voice will do nothing but help us as we begin this process. And, should she get the nod - I'd back her 100%.

(8,090 posts)Republicans will find something to scream about. We know they'll use "East Coast liberal" and "Pocahontas" against Warren. I don't know enough about Booker to know what they'd go after. I did see in some wingnut's FB feed something about Harris sleeping with an older man to advance her career (?). That was a mystery to me and I haven't researched it yet, but they will ALWAYS find something to get their meathead base to dance to.

(182,848 posts)If we've learned nothing since 2016 we need to not skip over the fact that women candidates work for us. Good candidates regardless of gender first but female candidates really churn up the grassroots and turnout.
Look at the 2017 Virginia General Assembly - the Dems came within drawing a lot from taking over the House. THAT is insane even in what statewide is a blue state (Obama Hillary Kaine Warner Webb MacAuliffe Northram etc). Them look at Abigail Spanberger taking a house seat that used to be an easy 60% for the Republicans. Virginia is geographically expansive and very reflective of the country's demographics and varying cultures. There are really 5 different Virginia's.
As for Warren - very smart, very engaging and likeable, she'd be a great candidate and an almost perfect counter to Trump. As for the negatives - the Pocahontas thing is like to moths to a flame. It will expose they inbreds and zap them in the eyes of the middle especially women.

(2,120 posts)I supported her from the beginning of her 1st campaign for Senate, and I continue to support her. I am proud that she is my Senior Senator. The Saturday after she won the nomination a rally was held on my city's common. All of the nominees were there as was former Governor Michael Dukakis. All had their chance to speak, but Elizabeth Warren was the headliner. After an event like this, a candidate typically does the rope line, presses the flesh, and heads off to the next event in another city or town. Not Elizabeth Warren. She stayed to meet with the citizens one on one. Notice, I did not say "voters". I saw her talking to a 12 year old boy. And when Elizabeth Warren talks to you, one on one, her focus is totally on you, even if you are a 12 year old boy who won't be able to vote for her until she runs for reelection. That's the Elizabeth Warren I've seen.
That said, I wish she wouldn't run for President. I like her just fine in the Senate where she isn't hampered by term limits or political hacks who would try to tame her. She doesn't need to be tamed!!!
