Predictions: Trump goes, unexpected candidate emerges in 2019 (The Hill)

"As a new chapter in American history unfolds with the start of another year, here are some predictions for the political scene in 2019:

Donald J. Trump's presidency will not survive 2019;
The downward trajectory of every aspect of his tenure indicates we are headed for a spectacular political crash-and-burn - and fairly soon;
His increasingly erratic and angry behavior, his self-imposed isolation, his inability and refusal to listen to smart advisers that he hired, all are leading him to a precipice;

Meanwhile, the global and U.S. economies are softening in great part because of the unnecessary and ill-conceived trade war he launched against Canada and our European allies; if he wanted to conduct a legitimate trade war against China, wouldn't it have made more sense to have trading allies such as Canada and Europe with us, instead of making them our adversaries?
Consumer confidence is declining and the American economy will slow noticeably in 2019. A recession is right around the corner, heading into 2020;
The volatility in the stock markets threatens to weaken Trump's support among the GOP donor class, which will translate to GOP senators pulling away from Trump in short order; "

Much, much more.

With Mattis gone, Trump will pull our troops out of South Korea, much to the delight of NK, China and Russia.

This will be the end for him with Senate repubs, providing the needed votes for the Stark Fist of Removal.

Fox recently lost several days in a row to MSNBC in the ratings race

Fox host Sean Hannity has lost 20 percent of his nightly audience since the midterm elections.

7. Don't be surprised if Mattis's name is brought up
Tue Jan 1, 2019, 03:18 PM
Jan 2019

It wouldn't be the first time.
True, back when this article was written he seemed like an unlikely candidate, but a lot has changed since then.

1) For starters, Trump has been nothing but bad news for Republicans since day one, and with each passing day
it's only gotten worse, and there's still a lot more to come.

2) Despite what some may think of him, Mattis is a very capable, intelligent, reasonable and likeable person... a rarity
in the republican party, and even rarer for someone that worked for the Trump administration.

3) Mattis's reluctance to run for the Oval Office two years ago was before he had any idea of the way things
would turn out since Trump took office, especially now with Trumps insistence that troops be withdrawn
from unstable regions against Mattis's advice.

4) Given #3, Mattis now has an ax to grind, and I do believe he has serious concerns about our
security and military presence abroad (not my beliefs mind you, but just thinking how a former
takes no shit Marine Corps General sees things).

It's impossible to say whether or not Mattis would reconsider his previous stance about running
for office, or that he would even win the nomination if he did run. But, do not be surprised if his name
is brought up by the R leadership as a potential contender.

Who is Gen. James Mattis, and why do some Republicans want to run him for president?

Have you heard of Marine Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis? Probably not, and that's okay — not that many people outside of military circles have.

But a small number of influential Republicans think he should become our next president.

For the past several weeks, a "Draft Mattis" campaign has been gearing up. The effort was first reported by the Daily Beast's Tim Mak in early April, who found that it had already gained some serious heft. "Close to a dozen influential donors — involving politically-involved billionaires with deep pockets and conservative leanings — are ready to put their resources behind Mattis," Mak reported.

"At their request, a small group of political operatives have taken the first steps in the strategic legwork needed for a bid: a package of six strategic memos outlining how Mattis could win the race, in hopes of coaxing him in."

Saying that this effort is wildly unlikely to succeed might be an understatement. But the fact that it exists at all — that literal billionaires are willing to pony up for an über-long shot — testifies to just how serious the collective freakout in the Republican party is getting.

Jan 2019

It's not just having the people leave but we would have to remove all of the equipment and dismantal all of the bases. This would take 3-5 years.

Now, 45 could announce that we will leave SK but I would think the military would drag its feet as no one in the Pentagon would agree with this strategy. And, where would the extra money come from to execute on this initiative.

The bases and probably a significant of amount of arms and equipment could be handed over to the ROK
forces, while we retain any nuclear arms, advanced tech and air superiority fighters.

I believe this is a common practice as it could actually cost more to bring the equipment back than
what we have invested in it. It would also allow the SK's to retain at least an adequate level of
defense capabilities, and not leave them totally high and dry.

He won't say he's not going to run again until he's milked his supporters for every dollar they have. Then he'll take his campaign war chest to Mar-A-Lago and laugh to his rich friends about how smart he is.

And they'll turn their backs on him. Who wants to be around a boor if you can't get anything from him?

I posted about this a week or so ago. Inside the White House they are saying (to NPR's Mara Liasson no less) that if he loses on this shutdown/$5B part of his base may become disillusioned and not show up.

Other than that - the damage from Mueller is done, regardless of actual charges. Trump's big problem is that he won't STFU. He provides himself his own rope. People are frankly tired of it.

Our biggest concern should be voter suppression not fatigue.

is a tool for distraction, quite possibly cooked up in a Russian think tank.

Drawing attention away from how badly he got repudiated by voters and the incoming Democratic House.

I hope you are right about his base.

He backed himself into a corner in an Oval Office.

From a negotiation standpoint you always allow some wiggle room (for all parties involved) and from a political standpoint you never make things binary
