HOORAY! Rick "The Dictator" Snyder is no longer the Governor of Michigan

Gretchen Whitmer officially sworn in as Michigan's 49th governor

Paul Egan, Detroit Free Press Published 12:35 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2019 | Updated 1:22 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2019

LANSING — Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took the oath of office as Michigan's 49th governor Tuesday, challenging Michiganders to overcome their partisan differences to build a better state, as she said the state's residents have done previously.

More than 2,000 people braved freezing temperatures on a gray and damp day. Rain that drenched and muddied the Capitol grounds overnight stayed away during the two-hour out-door ceremony.

Whitmer embraced her daughters Sherry and Sydney and husband Marc after using a family bible to take the oath of office from Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Clement, a Republican nominee to the court. Officials had said Justice Richard Bernstein, a Democratic nominee, would give Whitmer the oath, but Bernstein spoke briefly and handed the task to Clement, in an apparent sign of bipartisanship.

Also sworn in were Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel and Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Nessel, the first openly gay official to hold statewide office in Michigan, pledged to work for equality for everyone.

"We are all Michiganders and we are all entitled to equal protection under the law," Nessel told the crowd.

Benson pledged to move Michigan from "worst to first" in terms of government transparency and ethics.

I'm proud to be a Michigander for the first time in years. Happy New Year to us!

The way he snatched money away from education to fund his business tax cut should be criminal. His administration's complicity and inhumane response to the Flint water crisis was criminal.

There are some laws enacted during the lame duck session that need to be challenged in court.

And, of course, we need to execute on the ballot initiative to end gerrymandering. Fairly drawn districts will help even the playing field.

Snyder came across as reasonable, and that made him more dangerous. He was a right winger who started taxing the elderly so he could transfer wealth to his rich donors.

He should be imprisoned for what he did in Flint.

If there was a rick scott in his place there would be no Medicaid expansion. He also vetoed legislation that did away with pistol permits. Sure, he was a fascist, gave huge tax breaks to the rich, taxed poor pensioners, poisoned Flint, was an overall sob, but he didn't follow the fascist line blindly like the pigs in the other red states. Glad we have Dems in our high offices again and no more super majority though fascists are still the majority and there will be NO getting along with them if that is our new governors plan.

Manager laws, ad nauseum. He only vetoed the Medicaid expansion because he saw the poll numbers and knew he'd likely be voted out of office if he signed it. It was self-interest, not because he cared a whit about us.

His reaction during her speech was one of fear. You could read it on him.

Any action against him will come from the Michigan AG.

He's been a real SOB and as someone said up thread, a wolf in sheep's clothing with his "one tough nerd" act.

He's lucky he isn't in prison for what he did to Flint residents.

I always called him King Ricky. Thank god he's out. Now he can enjoy his condo on main street in Ann Arbor. I'm surprised he didn't pass
ALL of the republican bills in the lame duck session.

I wish people wouldn't swear on the Bible. I don't get that. Does that mean you are more truthful than if you just hold your hand up and swear. Then again, I don't have a religious bone in my body and don't like religion in any, shape or form.
