Richard Cohen eviscerates POtuS in Washington Post column.

Trump turned the White House into a madhouse

I drove past the White House the other day. It had been a while, and the place seemed smaller, somewhat tawdry, almost haunted. I imagined bats winging in and out , spider webs in the corners, and the president upstairs in the family quarters, talking back to the TV, railing against Nancy Pelosi, the Federal Reserve, Robert S. Mueller III, Emmanuel Macron, Theresa May, Jim Mattis, Jeff Sessions, Stormy Daniels and .?.?. who am I forgetting? Oh, yes, Barack Obama for, well, everything.

snip

Trump has soiled America. He has not made it greater but, in a word whose need is now apparent, worser. The America that previous presidents boasted about — Ronald Reagan’s “shining city on a hill” — is now a slum among nations. The goodness of the American people, another refrain of presidents past, is now a mere memory. But American goodness was always like the banner that tour guides held up: Follow me. Follow the United States because we saved Europe from the Nazis and Asia from Imperial Japan — and then Europe again, this time from the Stalinist thugs of Soviet communism. We saved Berlin with an airlift and eradicated polio with a vaccine. We thought we were good people. We thought we were great people.

snip

Trump’s one certain achievement will be to leave his successor an America that will become greater just by his leaving office. A president who does not lie, who does not try to buy the silence of a porn star, who makes his taxes public, who leaves moneymaking behind, who does not turn his political party into a beer-hall collection of ideological goons, who rages at the murder of a journalist by a foreign country, who respects the importance of a free press .?.?. such a president will make America greater just by showing up.

Now, though, as I pass the White House, it looks sad, the home of a hoarder — lies and scandals and crimes spilling out of the closets and Trump tweeting some inanity. It’s a madhouse that I’ve conjured. It’s a madman we’ve elected.

My view of my country changed for the rest of my life. I used to think that whenever we collectively had to make a choice between decency and complete lack of decency, we collectively always chose decency. I will never make that assumption again during what remains of my life. You can argue on the margins about us collectively chosing Nixon, Reagan, Bush II, but all three of them put together are not nearly as vile as Trump. They were clueless idiots and military romantics, but they fell short of the pure evil that is Trump.

40 million is about 15% or less. It is easy for me to believe that 15% of Americans are racists that simply hate "others".

He will not do this by resigning. Pence is just a different kind of evil. America will only become greater when a repug is not the POTUS. And even then, it will take a long time to undo all the atrocities that the orange haired criminal has commited.

In looking over the article again, there are several things with which I disagree. The second is that "we elected him". No, WE didn't. He was installed by corruption.

Priority One should be abolishing the Electoral College. LONG overdue! Should have been done after the 2000 debacle.

Since when does the LOSER of the popular vote still get to be President? The winner should rightfully be Whoever Got The MOST Votes.

but, he lacks the "train wreck" charisma that Trump has - people paid attention to Donny just to see what outrageous crazy statement or tweet he spouts next.

Pence is almost the complete opposite and had really bad approval ratings in Red Indiana when he left office there. Plus, he will be wounded by his association with Trump.

When I now see pictures of the White House, The Front Portico, The Oval Office, the side entrance to the Oval Office, Marine One, the Marine standing at the entrance to Marine One, it just looks so sad and foreign, it really does, even Air Force One looks cheaper and degraded now.

It is so true. I am embarrassed when I am teaching and have to bring up The President. He is a terrible role model for our children. No redeeming value. And I still wonder why you never see pictures of him and his grandchildren crawling all over him? The one picture I saw was with his holding the hand of one of Ivankas daughters. The little girl looked miserable and scared. You’d think his PR people would try to soften him but I think his own grandchildren find him repulsive!

By a 3 million plurality, we rejected him. He "won" because Russia, Israel, SA gave him buckets of money and millions (billions?) criminally illegal dollars in free social media ads, plus he had an entire network, Faux Snooze, promoting him every minute of every day, as well as James Comey's immoral and knowingly false smear of HRC. There's also the election hacking that probably gave him the small edge he needed. If that ass voted for him, he's part of the culprit and the problem and the mea culpa is far too late.

We MUST keep that fact alive and very present in all conversations, dialogues, and debates. This poseur DID NOT “get elected.” You CANNOT factually or credibly assert, as so many have tried to in all earnestness, that “the American people have spoken, and they elected him.”

NO. The American people DID NOT speak that he should be the chosen president, and the American people DID NOT elect him. By a resounding majority of three million votes, the American people voted for Hillary Rodham Clinton. Numbers don’t lie. And the sheer numbers of the popular vote went to HILLARY. An artificial and tragically obsolete construct super-imposed to appease the slave states and throw them a bone after they got their clocks cleaned somehow up-ended and delegitimized the actual voice of the people by the numbers.

The Electoral College belongs on the trash heap of history.
