(959 posts)b4 I say the manager took the order. From what I see he came to the front after a loud disturbance, didn't know what was going on, and tried to deescalate the situation by viewing the receipt. The vid doesn't show him serving the order or giving a refund.

(959 posts)I was questioning the part of the tweet and editing referring to the manager. The tweet says the manager "took his order". I didn't see that.
People are calling for that manager to be fired. Not the asshole drunk guy, not the victim. But a guy who appears in an edited short clip.
I would really like to see the full video of what led up to, the incident, and the aftermath.

(6,690 posts)The video doesn't show the manager taking his order. It shows the manager helping to get them separated, then later looking at a receipt. He then walks off camera before coming back to get the employee to leave the front end. The video doesn't show anything about what happened after that.
Twittersphere claims the police were called and the guy left without any food, so where this tweeter gets the idea the manager could care less is up for grabs.

(33,643 posts)From what I see here, I don't see a huge problem with the McD's manager's actions.
First order of business is to separate the two and try to calm the situation, and that's all I see anyone else behind teh counter doing.

He should have been detained until the police arrived, and arrested.
The manager should have defended the worker. Absolutely nothing else matters. She was assaulted. How dare that scum.
If only someone had a catapult on hand to hurl him right out into the middle of the street that could have been allowed, if the traffic was heavy enough. If not, he should have been driven to a construction site and rolled with a steam roller until uniformly flat and thin as a dime.

(6,856 posts)The manager is not a trained policeman or security guard. He was quiet and waiting for police. Not asking him to be as brave as his employee. He has a right not to get killed. And don't think that wasn't on his mind. He knows violent racism when he sees it. (Not to mention, the racist man just had his a-- kicked by a young woman, and no telling what his ego would cause him to do next).
MrGrieves
(315 posts)And under what authority should he have been detained? There was video surveillance to let the police do their jobs. None of the workers knew if this guy had a gun on him, a knife, or if he would become violent to the workers or other patrons in the store. Attempting to detain him may have endangered other people in the restaurant. Not a good idea.

(34,137 posts)The commenters have the same questions DUers do.
The body language of the woman BEFORE the man assaults her is telling - she is backed away from the counter with her arms crossed over her chest. Very defensive posture on her part. I wonder if he had already tried to grab at her before the beginning of the video?

(31,525 posts)Another employee was already standing behind the girl who was attacked before the guy grabbed her. Her defensive posture suggests that the customer had already said or done something to make her step back from the counter.

(5,969 posts)what can prompt a person to reach at a person like that. He claims he only asked a question but that is just weird. But I have to say, it was bittersweet to see that ass-kicking. While it was good to see she's a fighter, you can clearly see it was terror in self-defense for her as well. He was a bully that met fight or flight and wasn't ready when fight kicked in.

(315 posts)Who should have taken him down?
How should they have restrained him with other patrons and employees in the building?
Why was this necessary with video footage for the police to obtain the man with?
Why is it a restaurant managers duty to engage in security such as apprehension and detention of someone? This to me is like saying that teachers should be armed in schools it makes no sense to me. How does the manager (or any other employee) know what the man is capable of? Does he have a weapon inside his waistband? Is he capable of physically hurting someone (other than what we ALREADY saw on the video)?
We all want to see the guy get his just punishment for what he did but there are more people in the video to be aware of other than the assaulter and the victim here.

Pretty much anything African-Americans DO now-a-days is dangerous, and can cost them their jobs and worse. Their lives. Wonder WHY all of those young guys around her really just stood there and watched what was going on. One of the guys grabs HER.
Silly me, they might have thought they would have gotten shot and killed if the loony white guy had a gun, and maybe they didn't want to take that chance.
Doing ANYTHING while black can cost you your LIFE.

That man is evil. What he did to that young woman is beyond forgiveness. That is no way to treat ANY living being, any time, any where. He had to have been raised in an outhouse, or under a bridge with the right-wing trolls.
I hope the worker is going to be able to overcome what has to be a hell of a load of trauma. I'm certain I couldn't, and when she has overcome her shock, undoubtedly she will be hit by wave after wave of amazing rage. Who wouldn't? (6,856 posts)The situation was diffused. The cops came and arrested the man who assaulted the employee. Are we expecting the young black male to get himself killed rather than calm things down? I applaud the young woman for risking her own physical safety to defend herself. I am not going to demand the same from her co-workers who might just want to live to fight another day in racist America. Not asking them to die to satisfy our desire for a YouTube action flick.

(9,894 posts)You don't solve a violent situation with more violence. The two needed to be separated before the woman or somebody else got hurt. Plus, the last thing you need is other customers getting involved. It seems to me the situation ended as it should have with the instigator in jail. Employees should have...what?...jumped over the counter and started attacking the guy? That's the thinking of the cops when they enter a hot situation with lights, sirens, SWAT gear blazing and guns drawn. It just makes a situation worse.

(160,598 posts)Fancy a bite? McDonald's burger bought in Utah in 1999 looks exactly the same as the day it was first flipped (even after it spent two years in a COAT POCKET)
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

If you need another reason to kick the junk food habit this should do it.
A Utah man has unearthed a McDonald's hamburger he bought in 1999 - and the sandwich looks exactly the same as the day it was first flipped.
David Whipple kept the fast food meal for a month to show friends how the preservative-packed hamburger would keep its composure.
Still going: A Utah man has unearthed a McDonald's hamburger, pictured, he bought in 1999
But he forgot about it, finding it two years later in his coat pocket and then he decided to continue the bizarre experiment.

(37,161 posts)What's True:
Under specific conditions, food items (and other organic matter) dry out quickly and don't decompose.
What's False:
It's not the case that McDonald's menu items alone "don't rot," or that McDonald's food never "rots" under any condition, or that "chemicals" cause McDonald's food to not break down over the course of years.

(9,894 posts)what else he could have done. He deescalated and took over the transaction. Retail workers aren't law enforcement. I certainly wouldn't want to work in retail in these days when everybody's taking pictures and a bunch of people who never faced a customer and weren't present get to comment on how the situation was handled. The managers these days are caught between the howling Internet mobs and their employers.
The two coworkers seem to me like they pretty much did what they should have done as well. They tried and succeeded in separating them. The woman was way shorter than the customer and could easily have been pulled over the counter, which could have ended in a melee with serious injuries.

(26 posts)YouTube has dozens of employee/customer, customer/customer, employee/employee fisticuffs videos
(the same goes for any fast food chain you can think of).
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mcdonalds+fight
It happens often enough, that there are compilation videos...
Itshouldn't happen, but it does. Unfortunately these are the times we live in.
Anyhow, my observations and comments regarding this one...
1) I'm curious what set it off? It looks like the assailant already had his order (assuming it was his)
in front of him when the woman stepped back and the guy reached over and grabbed her.
Was there some verbal altercation between the two beforehand? What was said, and about what?
The way the manager checked the receipt might be a clue.
2) I think the rest of the employees and the manager handled the situation pretty well given the
circumstances. They didn't escalate things, one employee did step around the counter and pulled
they guy away (he didn't slug him or hard tackle him to the floor). The manager can only do so much
in this situation... he can order the customer to leave, or he can try to calm the person down and
find out what the problem is. That's it. They cant' detain the person, they can't respond in a manner
that could potentially cause physical harm, etc. All of this I'm sure is company policy, and more than
likely they have training for it (if they didn't before, they sure as hell will now). The reason for this
is no big secret... because they can, and will be sued for any reason, even ones out of their control.
3) Why didn't the other customers step in? Because in this day and age a person could be hit by a car
and bystanders first reaction is to pull out their cellphones rather than lend assistance; sad but true.
4) Despite what some have posted here, I fail to see where "she kicked his ass". What I saw was two people
struggling in a clownish manner. She managed to get one, maybe two glancing blows to his head and the rest
were hitting his forearms trying to break free, while at the same time grabbing onto his shirt pulling him forward
(perhaps to maintain her balance?). Once it was over, the guy didn't seem the slightest bit bothered or injured,
and neither did she. I know some people are 'shocked' by this, but if you've watched any of the other videos,
this one is more like some stupid schoolyard spat.
5) What's the assailants story? The arrest report says that hes a "transient". Does that mean he's homeless,
perhaps with some mental issues? Is it a black/white, male/female thing, or both, or neither? Maybe the guy
is just some temperamental asshole?
We'll probably never know the full story behind this, but what ever it is, it'll only be viral until the next time
something like this happens (and it will).
