(5,810 posts)and yet still toss their trash on the pile. Thus making a problem worse. A little common sense would go a long way here. Just take your trash elsewhere. Throw it out somewhere else, like at your hotel or at home. No need to add to the problem! But then ...why am I wondering about this? It happens all the time in bathrooms at restaurants or stores. Not enough attention to the bathrooms. It tells a lot about an establishment that does not maintain a certain level of cleanliness with its restroom facilities. So what is that picture (in the link) saying about this country??

(67,782 posts)I don't know if they still do it, but NYS years ago removed all trash cans from the interstate rest stops and put up signs instructing people to take their waste with them after using the facility. It worked!

(296 posts)I have been in seven different countries in Europe, big and small cities. To say there is no litter would not be truthful, you may see a gum wrapper or something small occasionally, but nothing like in the picture. I would say there is not that much litter scattered across all of Germany.

(22,398 posts)that we'd never see that level "anywhere but this country" is simply laughable.
It's a familiar sight in green spaces all over the Federal Republic: the morning after a particularly golden summer's evening, the grass is strewn with abandoned disposable barbecue trays, plastic cups and chicken bones.
Now town councils want to take on private security companies or even students to patrol their best-loved grilling spots and prod people into clearing up after themselves.
We've noticed that it isn't enough to put out signs, said Gerhard Bomhoff of the Werdersee Verein, which takes care of the lake of the same name near Bremen.
https://www.thelocal.fr/20170704/paris-citys-crackdown-on-dirty-streets-sees-67-percent-rise-in-fines
During the first half of 2017, the Paris authorities handed out a whopping 34,000 fines in its aim to make Paris a model of cleanliness.
These 68 fines are being handed out in greater numbers for "uncivil" behaviour such as tossing cigarette butts, public urination and dumping rubbish around the city.
And a stroll around certain black spots in the French capital quickly reveals why the measures are so necessary.
The sight of rubbish strewn around, waste bins overflowing and scores of cigarette butts thrown on the ground is an eyesore many who live in the city have long complained about. As is the stench of urine, that often pervades corners of many streets, especially after dark.
Etc.

And, trash buildup in Lebanon has been a huge issue for years. They simply don't have any place to take it.

(16,334 posts)when I see an overflow, I take it with me. Or I find another trash receptacle.
In bathrooms, I see paper towels on the floor because the bin looks full. But really it's just that the paper hasn't gone all the way to the bottom so a quick pressing down will free up half the bin. Do people do this at home? Fill the bin so they just start throwing things on the floor?
LakeSuperiorView
(1,533 posts)Nope, just throw it in the general direction of the trash bin, having used an 1/8th of its potential...
Makes me wonder what would happen to them in a paper bag...

(575 posts)It reminds me of Picture of Dorian Gray.
His supporters only see the 'wonderful' rich successful man he projects to them
But, in reality his real self is displayed in the painting. Recording his corruption and vileness.
What his supporters see is the man in the photo. But, his real self is the painting.
