As usual.

220 votes--a simple majority even if all third-party votes and "present" votes had gone for the Republican. With 435 members of the House, an absolute simple majority would have been 218.

Under House rules, a speaker is elected by a simple majority of those present voting for a Representative by name. "Present" is noted, but is not counted as part of the number of votes out of which the majority is determined. Three voted "present," and two did not vote at all, which diminishes the voting members to 430, out of which a simple majority would have been 216.

Anyone wanna bet Pelosi knew this days in advance?

This is what one might call how to make a foregone conclusion seem exciting.
