GOP senator calls on Congress to end shutdown without border deal
By Alexander Bolton - 01/03/19 04:02 PM EST
Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who faces a potentially tough reelection in 2020, says Congress should re-open the federal government, even without a deal on funding President Trumps border wall.
Gardner is the first Senate Republican to call for ending the partial shutdown even without a deal on Trumps demand for $5 billion to fund a border wall.

(51,638 posts)don't fall for false gestures. This is about money, political power and their reelections and not about people, the wall, being a mature civil servant, etc.

I seem to recall something along those lines spewed by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
I just love saying Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for some strange reason.

(82,849 posts)The Republicans have to defend a bunch of Senate seats in 2020, and even the weaselliest of them have to be apprehensive about facing the voters. Gardner has obviously been scared enough that he's even willing to consider doing his job to save his seat.

(3,205 posts)...There are going to be many such issues that will be passed in the House that the republican Senators will have to vote on. Speaker Pelosi will be pushing this; they will either cave, or go on the record opposing. Healthcare will be a big one, Social Security and Medicare, the VA. With a little luck and the right candidate we could pick up 6-8 Senate seats, a few more house seats and the Presidency in 2020.

(7,400 posts)forgetting.
When any large corporation is forced to close down its operations for an extended period of time, those losses and expenses are extremely hard to quickly recover. Maintenance and production schedules are missed. Recovery is expensive. Customer confidence and trust is shattered. Morale takes time to restore. Rivals make inroads, just as our international rivals make inroads when we are inactive or abdicate our responsibilities to lead.
The same principles can be somewhat applied to a government shutdown. Why the "corporations are people" cult can't fathom this is hard to believe. Well.....no it isn't. They don't give a crap if it doesn't affect them.

Any who aren't compromised in any way, should be doing as you said, falling line to do the right thing and stand up for he country, not trump.

(10,279 posts)1. Clean budget resolution to be passed by House and Senate and signed by Trump.
2. Immediate debate in House on the MAGA Wall, followed by a vote to build it with U.S. taxpayer money.
Trump claims that he speaks for the people. Actually, in our style of government, the Congress does that. So, let's see who has the votes in Congress.

(37,648 posts)This probably means that Colorado voters want the shutdown to end sooner rather than later.
