Office of @RashidaTlaib comments after MF video: The Congresswoman absolutely believes he needs to be impeached.
I thought it was strange that she framed this statement as a discussion with a child. Then I went looking and found this story about her sons with her "dabbing" as she cast her vote for Speaker Pelosi and I love it!

(26,060 posts)And it's become the story for cons to pretend all Democrats feel this way. I'm furious with her.
It was a tactical blunder and I'm guessing she'd had a few drinks... as for the rest, isn't that what they were going to do anyway?

(24,731 posts)She's Muslim. No alcohol.
I agree it was stupid. But here's the thing.
After excruciating worries over every iota of every act word or tan suit.... one service trump has provided is to show us there is in fact quite wide latitude when it comes to gaffes, misstatements half- and untruths.
Let it blow over. While it might affect her future, it does not affect the party nor the incoming class'.

All of the outrage should be reserved for those who are actually working to hurt us; those who are using their positions in government to enrich themselves at our expense; those who are working to dismantle our democracy; not those who are (correctly) speaking their minds.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)where your statement would be true. Democrats HAVE to be above this kind of nonsense, prove they can put their heads down and govern. They didn't win the House by promising impeachment - they won by talking about the issues. She screwed up - it's okay to admit that.

(14,249 posts)Its off-message, distracting and diminishes Tlaib, at least for a time.
You can bet leadership is going to put her on a short leash for awhile ... I doubt well be seeing her doing a lot of appearances on behalf of House Dems for a time until theyre sure she can stick with the message - and that enough time has passed that impeachment isnt the primary topic shes asked to discuss ...
bigtree
(85,996 posts)...I certainly hope and expect the sentiment in the Democratic Congress is to 'impeach the motherfucker."
Nancy Pelosi is smart enough not to put this new rep 'on a leash,' short or otherwise. That's just gross.
It's amazing what offends people. For instance, I'm offended by the notion that this representative for her district needs to 'stick with the message,' as if this representative doesn't have a right and responsibility to conduct herself as she sees fit.
That's a blind spot for a party which has appeared comfortable in the past with moderation and compromise with a opposition which is completely self-interested and corrupt. I expect Rashida Tlaib will articulate and advance the priorities which she campaigned on, and the party will be wise to accommodate her and her fellow freshman's energy and passion.

What happened to leaders being leaders and setting better examples? Have we really forgotten Obama so quickly?

(4,921 posts)I mean, seriously, she said "motherfucker." We're all adults here.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)in a conversation, she called the turd in the oval office a motherfucker. And yes, I'm an adult and was just as disgusted when kanye said the exact same thing in the oval office. Are you seeing what the media is doing with this? Is that what we really wanted to be talking about today? Excusing this kind of crap?
Hermit-The-Prog
(33,345 posts)How is calling him a "motherfucker" swimming in a sewer?
Words like that don't give me the vapors. Private prisons are much more offensive.

(33,345 posts)If it irritates the cons, then great!
I see no reason for anyone, anywhere to accept any bullshit morality instruction from anyone still in the Republican party. They've revealed they are willing to kill children to get power and money for themselves.
I don't see a thing wrong with her language.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)It was a vulgar and inappropriate comment made in the excited heat of the moment, egged on and cheered by adoring supporters. Unfortunately, they werent the only ones who heard her. It detracted from an otherwise awesome and positive day for the new Members.
It was a mistake and I hope she learns from it. Shes now a U.S. Congresswoman, not a fringe back bencher. She must do better.
bigtree
(85,996 posts)...he doesn't deserve the niceties, no more than any dangerous felon who is still perpetrating their violence and criminality does.

(85,996 posts)...the handwringing and finger-wagging coming from Democrats (?) is weak and self-loathing. Other criticisms from the right, which coincide (like it or not) are hilariously hypocritical.
No one should take heed of such timidity and navel-gazing nonsense. I'm glad to see the congresswoman ignore these politically useless, and politically timid criticisms of her remarks.

EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)It WAS inappropriate, not to mention off-message.
But I think she learned that now that shes a national figure, she has to assume that anything she says outside of her own home in the presence of her family and most trusted friends could be made public ... She can no longer talk to a room full of people as if shes riffing with a couple of good friends in private.
She didn't say it on the House floor. I'll save my outrage for the truly vulgar things, like locking children in cages, tear-gassing refugees, and throwing tantrums that shut down the government, cutting people off of their livlihoods. I don't give a shit that a Congresswoman called a motherfucker "motherfucker" at a rally with her supporters. And, if she was white and male, we wouldn't even be discussing this.

EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)But theres a time, place, method and strategy for talking about it. Im sure that a brand new Congresswoman about 430th in seniority blurting were gonna impeach the motherfucker into an open mic on the first day of Dems in control wasnt part of the plan. And it didnt make impeachment any more likely than it was yesterday morning.

Me.
(35,454 posts)she's a Congresswoman now and whatever she may call him in private, bare civility is called for. She's better than him and her public words need to reflect that. Also, a big focus today is on the Congresswoman who said the 'bad' word.

The real fight is taking place much more quietly, strategically and effectively. And the people leading it don't think selling wolf-tickets about it advances the fight at all.

(58,785 posts)While people are noting this, they're NOT talking about what Speaker Pelosi said after taking control of the house. Brandeis's quote is one of my favorites, so I sat right up when I heard this from HER speech opening this session of congress: We can't have democracy AND have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few. Wow!
We must remove all doubt that they do, and say to them: we will have an economy that works for you.
Let us declare that we will call upon the bold thinking needed to address the disparity of income in America which is at the root of the crisis of confidence felt by so many Americans.
As Justice Brandeis said, We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cant have both.
We must end that injustice and restore the publics faith in a better future for themselves and their children.
We must be champions of the middle class, and all those who aspire to it because the middle class is the backbone of democracy.
It has been so since the birth of democracy itself.
Aristotle said, It is manifest that the best political community is formed by citizens of the middle class in which the middle class is large and stronger than all of the other classes.

(33,345 posts)How dare you not condemn the mouth noises and instead point to the pent-up outrageousness that leads many to utter those noises!
Sometimes it takes a shock to get people to focus on harm that is in danger of being normalized.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)should be enough of a shock to wake people up, including those who have no idea how committed to democracy, the real thing, and progressivism in government she is. Not that she said it that bluntly, but our grandparents did it before us, and that's what that quote means. Kinda big.
Hermit-The-Prog
(33,345 posts)The RWers apparently wanted to discredit our new Representatives very early. The backfire is that it gets them more attention, so they get their views aired, and gets more attention for the more experienced Reps, so their views also get aired, and all those views have a common basis -- the Democratic Party platform. Oh, the horror!
The billionaire class has been fed by Republicans at the expense of everyone else since Reagan. It's time to stop voodoo economics.

When Brian -of all People - Williams is crowing about how he "Speaks Truth to Power" you know that the phrase is cheapened and reduced to nonsense syllables.
I'd like to give this one back to the Quakers and Civil Rights Workers.
It shouldn't just be a synonym for "clapback", "shit-talk" or "run of the mill-reporting".
bigtree
(85,996 posts)...and this legislator's pledge to hold the president accountable, including moving to the process of impeachment, it doesn't cheapen a thing. It's a call to arms, no matter how profane.
All of the tut-tutting cheapens the message, imo.
